of Remembrance: January
17-21, 2005
December, 2004—Assumption
College's Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), along with several
other campus offices and departments, is presenting a week of events
to celebrate the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and those affliated
with the Civil Rights Movement.
Monday, January 17, 2005:
Monday begins a weeklong toiletries collection event to benefit
the People in Peril Shelter in Worcester, MA. This event is sponsored
by Residential Life.
At 7:00 p.m., the movie Ray will be shown in the Hagan Campus
Center Hall.This event is sponsored by OMA.
Tuesday, January 18, 2005:
From 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., "Sounds of the Civil Rights Movement
and the MLK Legacy", an audio showcase of key speeches by Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., and other influential people during the Civil
Rights movement, will take place in Charlie's . This event is sponsored
by OMA.
At 7:00 p.m. "Two Sides of the Block", an interactive theater
performance, will take place in Charlie’s. Students from the
ALANA network and the International Connection group will perform
a series of interactive skits. This event is sponsored by ALANA /
International Connection.
During Candlelight Prayer at 10:00 p.m. in the Chapel, poetry works
by Langston Hughes will be read. This event is sponsored by Campus
Ministry.
Wednesday, January 19 , 2005
From 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., In Remembrance of Martin, a PBS
video documentary of highlights in
Dr. King’s career , will be shown in Charlie’s. This event
is sponsored by OMA.
At 5:30 p.m., "Where is the Dream Today?", a Food &
Conversation event, will be held with Mable Millner Director of Multicultural
Education at College of the Holy Cross , in Charlie’s. This
is sponsored by the Reach Out Center.
Thursday, January 20, 2005
"What is your dream?" Martin Luther King, Jr. was not the
only one that had one. What is yours? Come, share and write down your
dream at Charlie’s from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is sponsored
by CAB.
During both the Men’s/Women’s Basketball games in the
Laska gymnasium (men's 5:30p.m.; women's 7:30 p.m.), commemorative
ribbons will be handed out . Excerpts from "What is your Life’s
Blueprint?" speech by MLK, Jr. will be read. This is sponsored
by the International Connection / ALANA Network.
Friday, January 21, 2005
From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., singer/songwriter Mark Rust will perform
“Songs of the Civil Rights Movement” in Charlie’s.
This is sponsored by the Student Government Association.
