Octagonal Lantern Installed Atop Chapel of the Holy Spirit

Worcester, MA - The Assumption College Chapel of the Holy Spirit has recently undergone a major renovation project that culminated in the construction and installation of a lighted octagonal lantern atop its refurbished roof in early January.

The lantern was the final phase of the Chapel renovation project, which also included the installation of a new roof, interior lighting system, and sound system over the course of the last year.

To match the roof, the lantern was clad in zinc, including the cross. The lantern was manufactured and installed by Campersville Industries, Inc. of Kentucky. Campersville specializes in lantern and steeple design and has completed similar projects across the United States as far away as Alaska. Lauring Construction Company prepared the opening to receive the octagonal lantern, which casts daylight upon the altar and shines out at night. A silver cross atop the lantern identifies the building as Assumption’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

In terms of architectural design, a “lantern” is defined as “any light, decorative structure of relatively small size crowning a roof, dome, etc.” Some may easily confuse a lantern with a “steeple” which is defined as “an ornamental construction, usually ending in a spire, erected on a roof or tower of a church, public building, etc.” A steeple is similar to a lantern but includes a spire.
