Jessica Kingston '08 Wins First Place in Worcester Consortium Art Show

Worcester, MA - Assumption College student Jessica Kingston ’08 came away with first-place honors for her painting “Sweet November” in the Second Annual Worcester Consortium Art Show as announced last week.

Kingston placed first out of 175 entries for the show, which is hosted by ARTSWorcester. The show runs from February 24 through March 31, 2006 at the Aurora Hotel and features 45 works from the art departments of Anna Maria College, College of the Holy Cross, Assumption College, Clark University, Quinsigamond Community College, and Worcester State College. Submissions for the show included works in mixed media, photography, fiber, works on paper, sculptures, and paintings.

A Studio Art major from Peabody, MA, Kingston received $250 for winning first place. “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I won,” said Kingston. “I didn’t think my painting was that good. I was really shocked.”

Kingston’s winning piece, “Sweet November” (oil on canvas, pictured above left), was one of three submissions she made for the show. “Sweet November” was an assignment Kingston completed for her Landscape Painting course taught by Marlene Rye, lecturer in Art at Assumption. Kingston got the idea for the piece while studying the trees in front of Emmanuel d’Alzon Library during the fall, her favorite season. “I actually hated painting landscapes before I took the course, but now I love to do them,” she said.

Kingston began painting seriously when she was in high school and has continued to pursue her passion at Assumption. She hopes to someday use her love of art to become a professional painter or an art teacher. Kingston is also completing a minor in Marketing, which she could couple with her graphic design courses to plan for a career in advertising. She typically spends eight or nine hours a week on her painting projects and put in approximately 45 hours on “Sweet November.” Kingston notes French painter Andre Derain and his use of bright colors as a source of inspiration.

Wearing a paint-splattered sweatshirt, it is clearly evident that Kingston literally gets into her work. “That’s the only downside,” she said. “You have to have a whole separate wardrobe for painting.”

The ARTSWorcester Gallery is housed within the Aurora Hotel at 660 Main Street, Worcester. Hours are Tuesday and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
