Hurricane Katrina Affects Spring Break for Assumption Students
Worcester, MA - Every spring break the Campus Ministry program at Assumption College coordinates missions across the east coast, which give students an alternative to the typical beach and party vacations. This March, due to the recent destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Campus Ministry has added an additional mission to Louisiana in efforts to assist in the ongoing cleanup process.
Through the years, these missions have been examples of volunteer work at its best, and provide an element of fulfillment for the Assumption community.
The Hurricane Katrina Mission will take place March 4-10 in Chalmette, LA. Nineteen Assumption students will be participating in the mission as well as two staff members, Tom Clark, resident director for the office of Residential Life, and Stephanie McCaffrey, assistant director of Campus Ministry. Assumption is partnering with Stonehill College and groups from both schools will work alongside each other for the week. The groups will be working through the National Relief Network, which enables volunteers to participate in large disaster relief efforts while providing shelter and transportation to its participants. Missionaries will spend their time gutting out homes that were destroyed by Katrina.
The other five missions, which are held annually include:
• Bronx, NY Mission: This project will include six students who will stay at the Mercy Center of the Bronx, hosted by the Religious Sisters of Mercy from March 3-10. Students will assist in ESL classrooms with parents and facilitate an after-school program for children.
• Lansdale Mission: This project will take place in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and will be hosted by the Religious of the Assumption, from March 3-9. Six students will spend a day shopping, preparing, and then cooking a meal at Manna on Main Street, a kitchen and food bank. The main service activity will be building in Montgomery County with Habitat for Humanity.
• West Philadelphia Mission: This project will include four students and will take place March 3- 9. Hosted by the Religious of the Assumption, students will spend a day working at Holy Family Home, an elder care community. The students will also serve at New Jerusalem, a recovery community in North Philadelphia and will work at an after-school program at St. Ignatius School.
• Baltimore Mission: This project will include six students who will work with Habitat for Humanity of Sandtown, a neighborhood in Baltimore, during the week of March 4-9. The group will stay at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in the Inner Harbor neighborhood.
• Washington, DC Mission: This mission will be hosted by Michael Tomasian ’00, and will include six students. Missionary service will include days at the Gift of Peace, a residence for people living with AIDS that is run by the Missionaries of Charity, St. Anthony’s Catholic School, and Bethlehem House, a residence for developmentally disabled people.
