Kristen Kaddy '07 receives her award from
Elisabeth Howe, professor of French. |
March,
2005—Assumption
students Amanda Barone '05 and Kristen
Kaddy '07 jointly received an award this year from the
Union St. Jean Baptiste (USJB) Educational Foundation, based in
Woonsocket, RI.
The award was given in the name of La Fédération Féminine
Franco-Américaine, a group that made a donation to the Union
St. Jean Baptiste to create a scholarship fund. A ceremony was held
in Woonsocket in early January, at which Barone received her award.
Kaddy's award was given to her in a French class at the beginning
of March by Elisabeth Howe, professor of French.
Barone and Kaddy were chosen by the foundation on the basis of their
Franco-American ancestry and their demonstrated excellence in the
language. Because the award originated in the Fédération
Féminine Franco-Américaine,
only female candidates were eligible. Barone is a French major with
minors in Western Civilization, Art History, and Italian Studies,
and Kaddy is a Foreign Languages major in Spanish and French.
Assumption College has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with
the Union St. Jean Baptiste for many years. The USJB provided monies
for the construction of the La Maison Française building
in 1955, and their funds had an instrumental role in the creation
of the College's French Institute, located in the Emmanuel d'Alzon
Library since its inception in 1979. Most recently, Assumption was
chosen to acquire the Mallet Library from the USJB, a collection
of 6,000 volumes of books, research studies, French literature,
and other materials about the French and Native Americans in North
America. This collection was gathered by Civil War Officer Major
Edmond Mallet.
