Assumption Calendar of Events

Assumption College Announces January Events

Worcester, MA - Assumption College is pleased to announce its events for January 2006. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise specified.

Wednesday, January 11, 2006 – The Assumption College Center for Continuing and Professional Education will host an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. For anyone interested in enrolling in courses at the college level, and for those who have already chosen to pursue their studies at Assumption, the Open House for new students will teach you about the entire process of returning to school. Learn about programs of study, transfer credit, credit for prior learning, student services, what to expect in the classroom, and much more. The program includes presentations by College staff, students, and faculty. Registrations for spring will be accepted, and the bookstore will be open for the purchase of books. ALSO, The Center for Continuing and Professional Education will sponsor the following courses:

The Corporate Education Center at Assumption, in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management, will conduct “The SHRM Learning System,”a 35-hour seminar and test-prep course for HR professionals and those preparing to take the national PHR/SPHR certification exams. The course begins January 25, and the registration deadline is January 17, 2006. Discounts are available for HRMA, SHRM, and NEHRA members. The Corporate Education Center, in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management, will conduct “Essentials of Human Resources Management,a fifteen-hour seminar beginning January 31, for managers and those seeking to enter the field of HR.  The registration deadline is January 17, 2006. The Corporate Education Center will conduct a 14-week certificate program in Medical Coding and Billing, and a Medical Coding Certification prep. course, beginning on January 18, 2006. Friday, January 13, 2006 – Assumption will host the second annual NCCSA Student Leadership Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center. The conference is sponsored by the National Catholic Center for Student Aspirations and will be offered for middle school students from the Worcester Diocese.

Monday, January 16, 2006 – Assumption will kickoff its Remembrance Week Events by hosting two screenings of the film, In Remembrance of Martin (1986), a documentary about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. The story of this film is told through the eyes of family members, friends, advisors, and public figures, who remember highlights of King’s life and career.

Wednesday, January 18, 2006 – The Assumption College d’Alzon Arts Series will host an opening reception for artists Karen Shortsleeve and Rosemary Marshall in the Emmanuel d’Alzon Library at 4:30 p.m. Paintings and drawings by both artists will be on display in the Library from January 16 to March 3.

Thursday, January 19, 2006 – Assumption will host a screening of the film, Brown Eyes Blue Eyes, at 6:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. Imagine being forcibly removed from your parents and raised never knowing your true heritage – all because of the color of your skin. This film documents Jane Elliot’s universal Blue Eyes Brown Eyes exercise in discrimination. A discussion led by an Assumption faculty member will take place after the film.

Friday, January 20, 2006 – Assumption will host a screening of the documentary, Sweet Honey in the Rock: Raise Your Voice (2005), at 5:00 p.m. in the DiPasquale Media Center, Room 112. This film tells the story of the Grammy Award winning, all female, African American a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock. Rooted in the Civil Rights Movement, the group has been performing songs of justice, respect and peace for over 30 years.

Saturday, January 21, 2006 – Assumption College will host its annual Winter Homecoming events. The women’s basketball team will play Pace University at 1:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game versus Pace at 3:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Laska Gym. An Italian dinner for Assumption’s central Massachusetts alumni club will follow the games at 5:30 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. “A Salute to Winter Sports Captains” will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Salon.
