Bethany Hordern '06 Receives George Doyle Award
Worcester, MA - Bethany Hordern ’06 was presented with the George A. Doyle Merit Scholarship Award at a ceremony held on March 22, 2006 in the Testa Science Center. The award, given annually, is a cash award in the amount of $1,000.
This award is given annually to a senior Economics major that, by virtue of their academic success, potential, and overall college success best symbolizes the ideals of the department and of Dr. George Doyle, a longtime professor at Assumption College who started the Economics and Global Studies program. The award is made possible through contributions to the Doyle Scholarship Fund by department staff, friends, and alumni, as well as Dr. Doyle himself.
Hordern (pictured at left with Terry Doyle, the wife of Dr. George A. Doyle) is a double major in Economics and Mathematics. In the spring of 2005, she participated in the Semester-at-Sea Program taking courses and visiting places such as China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, and South Africa. A native of Swansea, MA, Hordern is looking for jobs in the actuarial field while also pursuing Ph.D. programs in Economics.
Hordern was a four-year member of the Assumption volleyball team and a two-year member of the softball team. A setter for the Greyhound volleyball team, Hordern finished her career ranked fourth on Assumption’s all-time digs list with 1,142 and became just the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs. She was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has served as a math tutor for the past two years.
Also in attendance at the ceremony was Matt Hill ’04, the 2004 recipient of the Doyle Award. Prior to his current position of financial advisor for Ameriprise Corporation, Hill spent 18 months working in Brazil as an international commerce assessor for a plastics recycling company.
