Holiday Drives Break Records; Bring Holiday Spirit to the Deserving
December,
2004— Deborah Lynch (left), director of Assumption
College's Reach Out Center, and Brandon Beloin '07
are shown in the final stages of the "Pennies for the Homeless"
holiday drive on campus. Debbie and Brandon were en route to Flagship
Bank on Gold Star Boulevard in Worcester to have five large jugs
of change counted and turned into a check to be given to Worcester's
People in Peril Shelter. The change amounted to $731.53 in cash,
trouncing last year's collection of $503.10.
This is just one of the holiday projects that Assumption has undertaken
during the 2004 holiday season. In conjunction with the Worcester
Public Schools and the Junior League of Worcester, the Assumption
community collected 65 brand-new coats for city schoolchildren in
need. Through the "Giving Tree" project, students, faculty
and staff also collected 131 gifts for names of children given to
the College by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Children. The community also came together to collect 136 toys
to ship to deserving children in Mexico. Participants also created
81 handmade cards that were then sent to family and friends serving
in Iraq. The Department of Public Safety collected an estimated
350 toys for the Toys for Tots program—and another $306 in
donations for the Telegram and Gazette Santa Fund—by allowing
students and staff to exchange a parking ticket for a toy or donation.
Finally, the Office of Residential Life is in the concluding stage
of a successful food drive for the Henry Lee Willis Center.
"Once again, the Assumption College community has shown incredible
generosity to those in need in the Worcester area, as well as other
parts of the world," said Lynch. "Hundreds of people have
been touched by the kindness of our campus."
