| HUMANARTS:
Hesperus and Andes Manta
March,
2005—Assumption
College's HUMANARTS series presents musical act Hesperus and Andes
Manta on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the
Holy Spirit.
Hesperus joins with Andes Manta, four brothers from Ecuador, in
a musical portrait of Colonial Latin America and the encounter between
the European and Native American cultures. Starting with music by
Spaniards written in indigenous languages (Quechua, Nahuatl, Canichana,
and Chilidugu) to entice the native peoples to join the Catholic
church, and pieces written by Indians trained by the Spanish in
European music, Ancestors goes on to include the Andean music that
has grown from the encounter. Hesperus’ European recorders,
viols, and lutes combine with Andes Manta’s panpipes, quenas
and charangos for a truly exotic sound. Negritos, music the Spanish
Colonists produces with African influences, is enhanced with Andes
Manta’s Afro-Latino percussion.
Hesperus was the first group to record the rich repertoire of The
Spanish New World in 1990, and toured the program extensively in
the U.S. for the Columbus Quincentennial and has since toured it
as well in Panama and Bolivia. Their website may be viewed at http://www.hesperus.org.
