John Grochowalski '75 and Tim Shea '72 Nominated for Anniversary Teams

January, 2006 - John Grochowalski '75 and Tim Shea '72 have both been nominated for NCAA Basketball Anniversary teams. Grochowalski, an Assumption College Hall of Famer and men’s basketball standout, is one of 28 players nominated for inclusion on the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball 50th Anniversary Team. Shea, who serves as head women's basketball coach at Salem State College, is one of five coaches nominated for inclusion on the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball 25th Anniversary Team.

The 50th anniversary of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Elite Eight will be celebrated throughout the 2005-06 championship season. The NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship began in 1957 and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary at the 2006 championship in Springfield, MA, the birthplace of basketball. To commemorate this milestone, a 50th anniversary team consisting of 10 student-athletes and two coaches will be named with your help. To be eligible for selection, all student-athletes must have been selected to the All-Elite Eight team in the year that the individual participated. Voting will conclude on January 31, 2006. Grochowalski, a member of the Greyhounds from 1971-75, played in seven Elite Eight games where he averaged 20.4 points and 14.1 rebounds per contest. He was named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament Team in 1974 and 1975 and helped lead the Greyhounds to the National Quarterfinals in 1972 and national third place finishes in 1973, 1974 and 1975.

The 25th Anniversary of NCAA Women's Championships will be celebrated throughout the 2005-06 championship season. Division III Women's Basketball began in 1981 and will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary at the 2006 championship. To commemorate this milestone a 25th Anniversary Team consisting of five student athletes and one coach will be named with your help. Shea led Salem State to an NCAA Division III national title in 1986 and was named WBCA Division III National Coach of the Year. He has led the Lady Vikings to four Final Four appearances (1984, 1986, 1995, 1999) and 22 NCAA Tournament berths.
