Open Houses for New Graduate Program in School Counseling

March, 2005—Assumption College's Graduate School will host open houses for its new graduate program in School Counseling. These open houses will take place on April 12 and May 4, 2005, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Marriott Room of Taylor Dining Hall. For more information, or to RSVP for either of the open houses, please contact Dan Provost at dprovost@assumption.edu or (508) 767-7426.

The major objective of the Master of Arts in School Counseling is to prepare students for a career as a school counselor. The program is designed to meet Massachusetts Department of Education Initial licensing requirements for School Guidance Counselor (Pre K–8 or 5-12).

The Master of Arts in School Counseling program is designed to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills and competencies that are required to be an effective school counselor. Theory, research, and practice are integrated in a sequential program designed to meet the challenges of providing comprehensive counseling programs in contemporary elementary, middle, and high school settings. The curriculum includes a strong counseling core with an emphasis on theoretical models, concepts, research based prevention, intervention strategies, and outcomes based models. Specific competencies needed for counselors in the school setting including: problem solving, consultation and collaboration skills, knowledge of evidence based prevention, and intervention strategies are emphasized. Diversity, disabilities, multicultural, and school reform issues are central to implementation of national and state developmental counseling curriculum models and are imbedded in coursework and practicum experiences. Coursework is coordinated with lab, pre-practicum, and practicum experiences to provide the student with multiple opportunities to gain knowledge, and to develop, refine, and evaluate their counseling skills within a school setting.

* We anticipate that the first class will enroll in Fall 2005.

* Licensure in school guidance counseling Pre K-8 and 5-12 will be offered.

* Graduates will be prepared to meet the challenges and demands of contemporary school settings.
