Hill Wins Doyle Award for Excellence In Economics

March, 2004—Matthew D. Hill recently received the 2004 George A. Doyle Merit Scholarship Award for excellence in Economics or Global Studies.

The award is given annually to a senior Economics major who, by virtue of their academic success, potential, and overall college success best symbolizes the ideals of the department and of Dr. George Doyle, a longtime professor at Assumption College who started the Economics and Global Studies program. The award is made possible through contributions to the Doyle Scholarship Fund by department staff, friends, and alumni, as well as Dr. Doyle himself.

Hill, a senior from Guilford, CT, will graduate in May 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Economics with an International Concentration. He is actively involved on campus, serving as a resident assistant and volunteering for the Reach Out Center. An avid traveler, he spent a semester abroad in Spain, and has traveled extensively through South America. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, he is currently interviewing for employment in Brazil.

"I was very honored to receive this award," said Hill. "I've worked hard here at Assumption, and it feels really good to see that my professors are recognizing that."

Derek Mohamed, the 1998 recipient of the award, also attended the ceremony. Now a financial advisor within Morgan Stanley in Wellesley, MA, Mohamed praised the College for having a part in his success.

"I received a truly broad-based, useful liberal arts education at Assumption," he said. "I've met so many influential people within the Economics department, including Dr. Doyle. This is an exciting honor to receive."

Theresa A. Doyle, the wife of Dr. George Doyle, was present at the ceremony as well. She spoke highly of her husband's passion for learning.

"George loves learning," she says. "He wants to see students' scholarly achievement recognized."
