Fall Career Fair Offers Students Several Opportunities
Worcester, MA (December 14, 2006) - Armed with business suits and resumes, Assumption College juniors and seniors took to the Plourde Recreation Center on the evening of November 16 as the Office of Career Services presented the 12th annual Fall Career Fair.
The move to the Plourde Recreation Center marked a major expansion of the event, which had been previously held in Hagan Campus Center Hall. Housing the career fair in the Plourde allowed the Office of Career Services to increase employer attendance and also provided an opportunity to host graduate schools.
The evening officially began with a ribbon cutting ceremony that featured President Tom Plough and his wife Monty. Dr. Plough has been a dedicated advocate for expanded career services for students. He has maintained a close interest in the outcome of students as they seek internships and professional advancement. Dr. Plough personally endorsed the career fair expansion as a logical step in promoting Assumption as a major employer destination.
In addition to employers, several graduate schools were also represented at the career fair. Along with the Assumption graduate school, Northeastern University, Roger Williams Law School, Regis College, and Wheelock College presented key elements of their graduate programs to interested students.
David Kowalczyk and Carol McGuiggan, co-directors of the Office of Career Services, along with Suellen Lazarek, coordinator of the CALLS program, helped put the event together.
Kowalczyk commended the steadfast support and encouragement that he received from faculty members Jeanne McNett and Stephen Theroux. He also indicated that Theroux, Brian Niece, Owen Sholes, and Heather Wilkins were very supportive as Career Services strives to expand science related recruiting. Both Bayer Diagnostics and Charles River Labs participated in the career fair this fall. Bayer Diagnostics completed extensive recruiting on campus last spring resulting in five hires of Assumption Science majors.
Members of the Accounting faculty including William Sullivan, Joe Foley, and Dan Jones visited with employers and graciously greeted several alumni that were in attendance. The Accounting faculty has fully embraced the internship process and has worked closely with Kowalczyk to help build a network that includes global companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, and Grant Thornton LLP. The Assumption faculty adds value to the experience that a small college is able to speak and work with students and employers on a personal level.
Last year students gained interviews during and immediately after the career fair. Several students received and accepted job offers over winter break during follow up interviews with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Amica. Home Loan Bank also met with a host of students and quickly invited them to second interviews. The career fair often serves as a professional launching pad for students who are quick to respond to the numerous opportunities.
