AC Campus Activities Board Recognized for Excellence At Regional Conference

CAB executives enjoy their time at NACA Northeast.

November, 2004—Assumption College’s hardworking, energetic Campus Activities Board (CAB), the student-run campus organization for social, entertainment, educational, and cultural events, recently represented the College at the National Association for Campus Activities’ (NACA) Northeast Regional Conference.

Thirteen CAB executives and advisor Karen Manson, assistant director of Student Activities, attended the three-day conference at Marlboro’s Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center in early November. More than 1,000 students from 124 Northeastern colleges and universities convened to attend educational sessions, present their past campus programming ideas and gimmicks, and view showcases of potential comedians, musicians, and other performers who cater to college campuses.

CAB’s chairperson Nick Laffin ’05 and assistant chairperson Meghan Dowling ’05 prepared extensively for months leading up to the conference. As CAB leaders, they were in charge of securing travel arrangements, gathering materials to bring to the event, organizing submissions of CAB work for awards consideration, and coordinating the AC group’s attendance schedule for the conference’s sessions. Although they put in hours of hard work and many late nights, they watched their efforts pay off.

“The experience was amazing,” said Dowling, who attended the conference for the second year in a row. “It was great to watch the new executives have such a good time.”

The NACA Northeast conference resembled a carnival at times, with outdoor activities such as inflatable “moonwalk” structures and toilet-seat scooter races for attendees to try. Each school set up a booth presenting their past promotional ideas, including T-shirts, posters, toys, and other fun trinkets, allowing other schools’ representatives to exchange imaginative concepts.

“We really liked seeing what other schools are doing,” said Laffin. “It was a great way to gather ideas for our upcoming projects.”

At an award ceremony at the conference’s close, Assumption College was honored twice for their hard work and creativity. In the student-body division of 2001-5000 undergraduates, Assumption’s CAB representatives brought home the coveted Best Creative Gimmick award, for advertising an event with gummy eyeballs, and Best Student-Designed Website, thanks to talented webmaster Andria Hoffman ’06.

The CAB executives returned to campus rejuvenated and bursting with ideas for the coming semesters. Laffin is thrilled with his staff’s renewed energy, stating that the school spirit of other attending colleges was “absolutely contagious.”

“They have really stepped up their creativity and flow of ideas,” said Dowling. “We’re going to see some great things in the near future!”
