The "Building Blocks" of a Rewarding Experience

Assumption students at Food Bank.Worcester, MA - Assumption College has made generous contributions in its efforts to give back to the local Worcester community. Various departments on campus such as Residential Life have implemented Assumption's values by reaching out to volunteer organizations.

On January 13, 2006, the internal and resident assistant staff of Residential Life engaged in a service project as part of their spring semester training. The group donated six hours of volunteer service to the Worcester County Food Bank and the Greendale Family Branch of the YMCA.

Orlando Corona, associate executive director of the Greendale YMCA, expressed his gratitude and positive feedback in regards to the resident assistants who volunteered their time in the offices. “Thank (you) so much for organizing such a great crew of volunteers,” he told the group.

The students and staff embodied the theme of their training program, “Building Blocks,” through the volunteer service they provided to the food bank and YMCA. They exhibited and performed their yearly goals of self-development, staff development and community development. Resident assistant, Susan Palumbo 06' said, “I really liked this activity. I think I am going to do more.” Not only did students and staff meet and apply their goals through their service work, but were rewarded with a “feel good” experience; encouraging them to take part in future volunteer opportunities.
