Bedwin Hacker Kicks Off Women's Studies Foreign Film Series

Worcester, MA - Assumption College will host a screening of the film Bedwin Hacker (2002) on Thursday, February 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise auditorium.

Directed by Nadia El Fani, Bedwin Hacker tells the story of a woman named Kalt who spends her days in an apartment jammed full of equipment, hijacking frequencies of foreign television channels and using them to broadcast messages in Arabic, signed by an animated cartoon character, a camel named Bedwin Hacker. Another woman, named Julia, is sent from a Parisian counter-hacking department to uncover who Bedwin Hacker really is and a great cat and mouse game between the two women begins. In the process, a modern portrayal of North African women and culture is presented.

Robert Lang, associate professor of cinema at the University of Hartford, and recently a Fullbright scholar at the University of Tunis, will introduce the film. A discussion will follow the screening.

Bedwin Hacker is the first installment of Assumption's three-film series "Envisioning Women's Lives: Stories from the Middle East." The film festival, which highlights the lives of women in the Middle East, is sponsored by the Women's Studies program. Rana's Wedding (2002) will be shown on Monday, March 27 at 4:00 p.m. and The Fifth Reaction (2003) will be screened on Wednesday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m. All films will be shown in the La Maison Francaise auditorium.
