Assumption College Announces April Events
Worcester, MA - Assumption College is pleased to announce its events for April 2006. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise specified.
Monday, April 3, 2006 – Dr. L.R. Sorenson, professor of Political Science at Assumption College, will present the Fr. Ernest Fortin, A.A. Lecture at 3:30 p.m. in the Emmanuel d’Alzon Library. Sorenson will speak on “The Letter to Geneva: The Key to J.J. Rousseau’s Political Philosophy.”
ALSO, Sandra Keating of Providence College will present the Marie-Eugenie Milleret Lecture entitled, “Exploring the Spiritual Bonds that Unite Us: Reflections on the Church’s Mission to Dialogue with Muslims” at 7:30 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. This lecture is sponsored by Assumption’s Ecumenical Institute.
Tuesday, April 4, 2006 – As a part of Assumption’s Sweatshop Awareness Week, Dr. Robert J.S. Ross of Clark University will present a lecture entitled, “Slaves to Fashion: Sweatshops in Global Context,” at 7:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. Dr. Ross received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1963, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1966 and 1975, respectively. He has been a professor of Sociology at Clark since 1972. He is Director of the International Studies Stream and among the founders of Clark’s program in Urban Development and Social Change.
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 – FOMMA, a Mayan women’s playwright cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico, will present the play Just with the Love of My Mother at 4:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. FOMMA is an acronym for “Forteza de la Mujer Maya” (Strength of the Mayan Woman), and was founded in 1994 by Petrona de la Cruz and Juarez Espinosa, the first Indian women playwrights. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages, Women’s Studies, Multicultural Affairs and Residential Life.
Thursday, April 6, 2006 – As part of Assumption’s Sweatshop Awareness Week, The High Cost of Low Price (2005), a 20-minute documentary on Wal-Mart, will be shown multiple times from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center Hall. Directed by Robert Greenwald, this documentary examines the impact of the retail giant on local communities.
Friday, April 7, 2006 – As part of the Spring Series on Developments in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, the workshop “Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Adults: A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach” will be presented by Peter Moran, Ph.D. from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. There is a $45 registration fee for this event. Moran holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and an M.S. in clinical psychopharmacology. He is senior partner and clinical manager of Prescott Health Care, a multi-site, multi-disciplinary private mental health group in Central Massachusetts. Those attending the workshop will become familiar with specific cognitive behavioral strategies in treating OCD and will learn how to distinguish OCD from other anxiety disorders.
ALSO, The Assumption College Chorale will present its “Mostly Mozart” concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. This concert will include music by Wofgang Amadeus Mozart in celebration of the 250th anniversary of his birth. The program will include “Vesperae Solennes de Confessore” and “Clarinet Concerto” featuring Andrew Tomaski ’06 with a professional orchestra.
Saturday, April 8, 2006 – Assumption will host the Fourth Annual Rhythmic Revolution Dance/Drill Competition from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Laska Gymnasium. Experience the energy of dance and the power of teamwork as members of the New England Drill Team compete.
Monday, April 10, 2006 – Assumption will hold a Blood Drive from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Hagan Campus Center. This event is sponsored by Assumption’s Student Government Association.
ALSO, Paul Hollander will deliver a lecture entitled, “Violence of Higher Purpose: The Experience of Communist States,” at 4:00 p.m. in the Marriott Room of Taylor Dining Hall. Hollander is a renowned expert on comparative genocide and totalitarianism and is the editor of an important new anthology titled From the Gulag to the Killing Fields: Personal Accounts of Violence and Repression in Communist States. This lecture is sponsored by the Political Science Department.
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 – Author Nancy Malone will present a lecture on the spirituality of reading at 4:00 p.m. in the Testa Science Center Fuller Auditorium. Malone is an Ursuline nun with a degree in Theology from Harvard Divinity School. She was an editor at Religion and Intellectual Life and co-editor of Cross Currents. Malone is the author of Walking a Literary Labyrinth: A Spirituality of Reading, which reflects on how all kinds of reading have opened her path to God.
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 – Assumption College will host a screening of the film The Fifth Reaction (2003), at 5:30 p.m. in the La Maison Francaise Auditorium. This film tells the story of a young Iranian teacher, named Fereshteh, who has recently lost her husband. Tradition requires that she go to live with her children in the home of her father-in-law now that her husband has died. The father-in-law wants her to marry one of his younger sons, but Fereshteh refuses and embarks on a quest for her own freedom and independence and in the process provides us with a variety of views of Iranian society. This film is directed by Tahmineh Milani and will be introduced by Dr. Ann Murphy, Assumption College, English Dept. This film is the final screening of Assumption’s three-film series entitled, “Envisioning Women's Lives: Stories from the Middle East.”

Wednesday, April 26, 2006 – The Emmanuel d’Alzon Art Series will host an opening reception for the Senior Art Seminar at 4:30 p.m. in the Emmanuel d’Alzon Library.
ALSO, The Assumption College Band will perform its annual Spring Concert at 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The concert will feature works by Duff, Nowak, Mozart, Churchill, Berlin, Anderson, Barker, Grundman and Bernstein. Michela D’Eramo ’06 will perform as a soloist in Leroy Anderson’s “A Trumpeter's Lullaby” and Andrew Tomaski ’06 will perform “Rondo for Clarinet” and “Wind Band” by Mozart. Also featured on the program will be the Assumption College Flute Ensemble who will perform “Whistle While You Work” by Frank Churchill as well as the Assumption College Clarinet Ensemble who will play “Puttin’ On The Ritz” by Irving Berlin. The concert will be conducted by Director Bruce Hopkins.
