Bryan Wrenn
Class Year: 2007
Hometown: Grafton, MA
Major: Music and Accounting
Music is Bryan Wrenn’s first love. Accounting hooked him later.
Bryan, a recent graduate with a double major in Music and Accounting, knew that Assumption was the right school for him, given his serious interest in the guitar. He also knew that the liberal arts college would offer him many other study options to explore. He did not anticipate finding a second major in the Department of Business Studies.
“I’ve always loved music, particularly the guitar,” Bryan says. “Coming to Assumption gave me the chance to major in music, which I did. I also wanted to work with Professor Peter Clemente (an award-winning guitarist). After taking an accounting course with Professor (William) Sullivan, I was hooked on accounting, and declared a double major.”
A native of Grafton (MA), Bryan began playing the guitar in sixth grade. He studied jazz and rock guitar styling with Joe D'Angelo, a local musician and teacher. In addition to solo and orchestral performances, Bryan has played from the “pit” for theatre productions that have included Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Miserables, among others. This semester he presented his senior recital on classical guitar in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
Bryan participated in the Assumption Chorale. He often went to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit to play his guitar, when he was not in music classes. Playing with and learning from acclaimed musician Peter Clemente was a tremendous experience for Bryan.
Recently, Bryan performed in the Undergraduate Symposium, where he played Sonatina Meridional (Manuel Ponce, 1882-1948). The work features three movements that display strong characteristics of flamenco and Spanish folk music, combined with Neo-classical, Romantic and Impressionistic elements. Bryan chose this piece because of its varied elements – cultural, stylistic elements with a Spanish influence – which, he says, “appeal to a broad audience.”
Bryan will attend The New England Conservatory for a Master of Music degree with an interest in teaching and performance. He will study under guitar virtuoso Eliot Fisk, himself a student of renowned Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia.
