Jillian Randall
Class Year: 2007
Hometown: Lynne, MA
Major: Business Communications with minors in Japanese Studies and Visual Arts
Recent graduate JIllian Randall was a teacher, an intern and a student in Tokyo, where she completed her final semester far from campus.
Teaching English to school children; speaking Japanese with her colleagues at work, and taking classes to expand her language skills has enabled this Business Communications major, with minors in Japanese Studies and Visual Arts, to realize her goals of international employment and immersion in Japanese culture.
Jillian became enthralled with Japan, its people and its culture during her Study Abroad experience in Tokyo last year. It was a life-changing experience for her.
"The high context society of Japan suits me well," Jillian said. "I wanted to return to Japan to gain experience in a Japanese company and to improve my Japanese language abilities."
She hoped to return as an intern, working for Interac, Japan's leading private provider of assistant language teachers. To make that happen, Jillian sent resumes to more then 50 companies in Japan. While waiting fro confirmation of an internship with Interac. her first choice, she interviewed in New Hampshire and explored visa requirements. She also chose her courses for the upcoming semester in anticipation of the internship offer coming through. Jillian knew she was taking a big risk, but believed it would be worth it if she were offered the internship. Ultimately, the risk paid off.
Jillian is certain that she was accepted in the highly-competitive program because she was extremely motivated and persistent in her quest to secure and internship in Japan. She found Assumption very supportive throughout the entire process. Currently, she is enrolled in and receiving credit for the Internship in Business course at the College.
Jillian wants to work for a Japanese company or for an American company with offices in Japan, and continue to refine her language skills. In the meantime, she returned to the U.S. in time to report on her internship experience in Japan - and to graduate in May with her class.
