Joyce Mudymba

Class Year: 2008
Hometown: Malden, MA
Major: Accounting with minors in Law & Economics and Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies

Joyce Mudymba demands attention – from the nine-member AC Step Team, which she captains, as the team practices ambitious routines for upcoming competitions.

Step, a tightly choreographed group performance that calls for intricate and demanding footwork, as well as gymnastic and other athletic elements, is a club sport at Assumption. The team, which competes with other colleges, practices hard under this junior’s direction.

Step is “an addiction” for Joyce, who says she “can’t go a day without stepping – in the shower, my room, living room, as I’m walking to class.” A high-energy achiever in the classroom and beyond, this Accounting major enjoys being part of a team. Through the team, she has met new people and made new friends, all while participating in a sport. The many hours of hard work Joyce invests in the Step Team paid off this fall when Joyce and her teammates competed in a step tournament. The team placed third in their first ever competition, which was a tremendously rewarding experience for Joyce.

In addition to her step team involvement, Joyce participates in the Mission Trips offered by Campus Ministry. In 2005, Joyce took went along on a mission trip to West Philadelphia. It was “an experience of a lifetime” for her. In addition to her backpack, Joyce has learned to bring an open mind and a learning spirit on mission trips.  The people she met in West Philadelphia taught her to appreciate everyone for who they are. Joyce wants to return there on the next sponsored trip to help those in need again.

Joyce came to Assumption with a serious interest in Accounting. She has found strong support in the Business Department. Given her caring nature, it is no surprise that her minor is in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies. Mission trips have fanned her deep interest in helping and advocating for others.

Joyce very carefully divides her time between academics and campus activities. If she is not studying for accounting exams, she might be encouraging her teammates as they prepare for a Step Competition or preparing for the next Mission Trip. In addition, Joyce participates in ALANA, the Chapel Choir and the Track Team. She also serves on Recreational Sports Council, among other activities and service commitments.
