The Legacy of Mabel C. Ryan
Lives through Endowed Scholarship
Mabel C. Ryan was a bright, caring woman who volunteered at local organizations and institutions, including Assumption College. Before she passed away in 1984, she established a charitable remainder trust to benefit both her beneficiaries and some of the institutions and organizations where she volunteered.
In November 1996, Assumption College received the benefits that the trust allotted, and the Mabel C. Ryan endowed scholarship was established. This year, six students received scholarship assistance through Ms. Ryan's generosity.
Ms. Ryan was a physical therapist and worked for the Veterans Administration for many years. She organized physical therapy departments at Veterans Administration hospitals in Atlanta, Washington, DC, the Bronx in New York City, and the former Rutland Heights Hospital. The physical therapy department in the Bronx was designed to treat Korean War paraplegic patients with spinal injuries.
Ms. Ryan also was responsible for the organization and supervision of a
program for physical rehabilitation for students at Columbia and New York Universities. Ms. Ryan valued education and studied physical therapy at Harvard, and later graduated first in her class at the Institute for the Disabled in New York City.
It is due to her generosity that students this year, and for years to come, will be able to pursue their academic goals with assistance from the Mabel C. Ryan Scholarship.
