Academic Departmental Awards


These student biographical summaries were read at the Honors Convocation, April 25, 2002. They give you a good idea of the variety of interesting student scholars we have at Assumption:

 


The Award in Art History is presented by Dr. Jason Rosenfeld to Kaitlin Keon, a Junior from Surrey, England. Kaitlin has been involvedwith various intramural sports, and she was a volunteer for Open House. Next year, in her Senior year, she hopes to intern at the Worcester Art Museum. After she graduates, Kaitlin wants to travel, and to work in an art museum or gallery either in this country or in London.

The Award in Music is presented by Fr. Donat Lamothe to Kathryn Mancusi, a Senior from Norwalk, Connecticut. Kathryn is a Special Major in Music, and she has been a member of the Assumption College Chorale, the Chapel Choir, and the Assumption College Band for four years. She is a writing and music tutor at the Academic Support Center, and she is Online Editor for Le Provocateur. Katie’s short story “On theRoad” was awarded Best Fiction in the Spring issue of the Phoenix, Assumption’s literary magazine.

The Award in Elementary Education is presented by Dr. Cathleen Stutz to Sarah Klim, a Senior from Stoughton, Massachusetts. Sarah has served on the Campus Activities Board for four years, and has been Assistant Chairperson this year. She has participated in the START retreat program and the Paw Prints Program. She plans to be an elementary school teacher and to continue her study toward a Master’s Degree in Education.

The Award in Secondary Education is presented by Dr. CathleenStutz to Carolyn Cormier, a Senior from Putnam, Connecticut. Carolyn is aPresidential Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she is graduating SummaCum Laude with an Honors Program Certificate. She has tutored Math andPhilosophy at the Academic Support Center, and has been involved inintramural sports for three years.

The Award in Mathematics is presented by Dr. Kevin Carlin and it also goes to Carolyn Cormier. Next year Carolyn plans to teach high school math in either Massachusetts or Connecticut, and also continue her study for a Master’s degree.

The Award in Computer Science is presented by Dr. Robert Fry to Stephen Leroux, a Senior from Charlton, Massachusetts. Steve has worked for Resnet for three years, and he has been involved in intramural sports for four years. Steve hopes to obtain employment in the field of computer science.

The Award in Accounting is presented by Professor Frank Marino to Lindsay Sharon, a Junior from Marlboro, Massachusetts. Lindsay has a job off-campus at a credit union in Marlboro where she works three-four days a week, and she has also been involved in intramural floor hockey. After graduation next year, she hopes to get a job with a public accounting firm, and eventually work to earn an M.B.A. Degree.

The Award in Management is presented by Professor Saeed Mohaghegh to David Harvey, a Senior from Worcester, Massachusetts. David has been involved in APICS which is the American Production Inventory Control Society, and he has beenpPresident of the Assumption College Student Chapter for two years. He has been a volunteer for Big Brothers of Worcester County for six years. David plans to go on to graduate school to earn an M.B.A. Degree.

The Award in Marketing is presented by Dr. Jeffrey Hunter to Stephanie Fleming, a Senior from Feeding Hills, Massachusetts. Stephanie has played Varsity Field Hockey for four years, and was a two-time second team All-American award winner. She has been an S.G.A. Member, and she studied in London for Spring semester last year. Stephanie will begin working in June as a Human Resources Management Trainee at Cintas Corporation in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

The Award in International Business is presented by Professor Pete Murphy to Nikki Andrellos, a Junior from Clinton, Massachusetts. Nikki has been involved in intramural floor hockey, and she has been an Open House volunteer and a fund-raiser for Institutional Advancement. After graduation in 2003, Nikki hopes to work at a firm that deals with the European Trade Market or the European economy, and also to do some traveling.

The Award in Communications with Business Concentration is presented by Professor Gene Diodati to Juliane Bahde, a Senior from Leominster, Massachusetts. Juliane has been involved in intramural sports and has volunteered at Girls Inc. and at the Salvation Army. She has also worked off-campus during her college years. After graduation, Juliane will start training at Enterprise Rental where she will be involved in sales andmarketing.

The Award in Economics with Business Concentration is presentedby Dr. Colleen Fahy to Jeffrey Cicero, a Senior from Worcester, Massachusetts. Jeff has been on the Varsity Baseball Team and the Intramural Football Team, and he recently won the George Doyle Award from the Economics Department. Jeff is undecided about the future, possibly will pursue a Master’s degree and a career in Economics.

The Award in Economic Issues and Policy is presented by Dr.Colleen Fahy to Erica Fedorczuk, a Senior from Auburn, Massachusetts. Erica has a job off-campus which takes up all of her free time. After graduation, she hopes to work for a financial or investment company.

The Award in Economic Theory is presented by Dr. Colleen Fahy to Elizabeth Keeley, a Senior from Caledonia, New York. Beth has been S.G.A.Vice President for Academic Affairs for the past two years, an Orientation leader, and she tutors Economics at the Academic Support Center. She is a Presidential Scholar and an Augustine Scholar. She has been involved in the mentoring program at St. Peter’s Church in Worcester for three years, and went to Philadelphia in March to participate in the Spring break mission. In September Beth will begin Graduate School at UMASS Amherst.

The Award in English is presented by Dr. Karen Jahn to Mary Brunelle, a Senior from Franklin, Massachusetts. Mary is an Aquinas Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she has been Editor of two of our literary publications on campus. She is currently working in the Development Office at UMASS Medical School. She will continue to work at UMASS Medical School after graduation and will continue to do volunteer work.

The Award in Communications is presented by Dr. Michael Land to Elizabeth O’Donnell, a Senior from Westborough, Massachusetts. Liz is an Aquinas Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she is Editor-in-Chief of Le Provocateur, the campus newspaper. She is a member of the Assumption College Chorale, and a member of the Campus Ministry Council. Liz plans to pursue a career in writing, editing, and publishing.

The Award in Foreign Languages is presented by Dr. George Aubin to Mary Haggerty, a Senior from Hudson, New Hampshire. Mary has been involved with theater on campus and she is student director of AC Upstage.She tutors French and Spanish at the Academic Support Center. She is a member of Assumption College Chorale, and the Band, and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. Mary plans to work in television and radio production in the Boston area.

The Award in French is presented by Dr. Elisabeth Howe to Breanne Gendron, a Senior from Northbridge, Massachusetts. Breanne plays the flute and the piccolo for the Assumption College Band, and she is flute accompanist for the Assumption College Chorale. She is a member of the French National Honor Society and the French Club. Breanne plans to go to France in the Fall to teach English for a year.

The Award in Spanish is presented by Dr. Andrea Hamos to David Blodgett, a Senior from Northbridge, Massachusetts. David has been involved in Student Government for four years, as a Senator and Class Secretary. He is President of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. He plans to start this summer at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the UMASS Medical School and pursue a doctoral degree in Biochemistry.

The Award in Latin American Studies is presented by Dr. Magda deMoor to Jaclyn Scott, a Senior from Danvers, Massachusetts. Jaclyn is an Aquinas Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she has tutored at theAcademic Support Center for three years. She has participated twice in the Nicaragua Mission, and studied last Spring in Costa Rica. Jaclyn wants towork within the Hispanic community, and eventually wants to get a Master’s degree in Bilingual and ESL Education.

The Award in Classics is presented by Dr. Bonnie Catto to Erin Crowley, a Senior from Center Harbor, New Hampshire. Erin is a member of the Classics Club, and she tutors at the Academic Support Center. She plans to attend Law School in Boston in the Fall.

The Award in History is presented by Dr. John McClymer to Erik LaFortune, a Senior from Palmer, Massachusetts. Erik has been an R.A. for three years and a teaching assistant in History. He has been involved in College Republicans, the Student Conduct Board, and he is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. Eric has received a merit-based scholarship of $14,000 per year, and will attend Western New England Law School.

The Award in Biology is presented by Dr. Patricia Reisert to Kelly Barnes, a Senior from North Brookfield, Massachusetts. Kelly wil lbegin in May to work in a biological research laboratory, and she plans to continue her education and earn a Master’s degree in the field of Biology.

The Award in Biology with Biotechnology Concentration is presented by Dr. Steven Theroux to Erin Toohil, a Senior from Ashland, Massachusetts. Erin has been involved in French Club, Campus Ministry, and Student Research Club. She has been an active volunteer at St. Anne’s Free Clinic in Shrewsbury, and will spend next year on a Fulbright Fellowship in Ireland. Erin plans to go to medical school and become a pediatrician.

The Award in Chemistry is given to Keely Heidtman, a Senior from Norwich, Connecticut. She presented a paper in Milwaukee,Wisconsin, at a research conference.

The Award in Environmental Science is presented by Dr. Brian Niece to Jennifer Rines, a Senior from Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Jennifer is a Presidential Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she is a Mathematics tutor in the Academic Support Center. She plays Varsity Field Hockey and has been a tour guide for Open House. Jennifer plans to study environmental engineering in graduate school, and hopes to find a job inthat field.

The Award in Philosophy is presented by Dr. Paul Gallagher to Audrey Anton, a Senior from Palmer, Massachusetts. Audrey is an Aquinas Scholar and an Augustine Scholar, and she received the Raymond Marion Award for her senior year. She is a Philosophy and Writing tutor at the Academic Support Center. Audrey has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and will do research in gerontology in Equador next year.

The Award in Psychology is presented by Dr. Kenneth Moynihan to Raphelle Lamothe, a Senior from Spencer, Massachusetts. Raphelle completed her degree requirements for majors in Psychology and Spanish in December, and is now studying for her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology here atAssumption. She has tutored Spanish in the Academic Support Center, and she studied in Madrid, Spain, during her Junior year. When she completes the Master’s program, Raphelle hopes to study for a doctorate in clinical psychology and work with children and their families.

The Award in Social & Rehabilitation Services is presented by Dr.David St.John to Kathryn Urban, a Senior from Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Kathryn has been a student representative for the Gerontology StudiesProgram, and a volunteer with Special Olympics and with the Best Buddy Program. She has also worked off-campus during her college years. Kathryn will attend Northeastern University next Fall and pursue a Master ofScience degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She hopes to work with either pre-schoolers or geriatric patients, or perhaps a mix of both.

The Award in Sociology is presented by Dr. Susan Melia to JennieWatson, a Senior from Monson, Massachusetts. Jennie is a tutor of Writing and Sociology at the Academic Support Center, and a member of the Sociology Club. She is an intern at the Burncoat Family Center in Worcester. Jennie has just accepted a full scholarship and paid assistantship in the Graduate Program for Sociology at the University of New Hampshire. She hopes toearn a doctorate and teach at the college level.

The Political Science Award is presented by Dr. John Crutcher to two students. The first recipient is Kevan Kivlan, a Senior from Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Kevan was an Orientation Leader, a member of the START retreat for three years, and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa.

A second Award in Political Science is presented by Dr. John Crutcher to Kathryn Rogers, a Senior from Easthampton, Massachusetts. Kathryn has participated in several volunteer activities through the Reach-Out Center, and she is a member of the College Democrats. She hopes to work in State Senator Stephen Brewer’s office in the State House in Boston, and she plans to continue her education and earn a degree in law.

The Award in Theology is presented by Fr. Roger Corriveau to Kevan Kivlan, a Senior from Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Kevan was theAssumption College representative at the National Conference for Catholic Colleges in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during his Sophomore year. And he was a member of the Cuba mission this year.


SPECIAL AWARDS:

The Eugene W. Byrnes Scholarship is presented by Brian Niece to Julia Larouche, a Junior from Lunenburg, Massachusetts.

The Joseph Sheerin Merit Award for the Study of Classical Languages is presented by Bonnie Catto to Daniel Moran, a first-year student from West Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The William James Award in Psychology is presented by Kenneth Moynihan to Enila Cenko, a Senior from Worcester, Massachusetts.

The George S. Elias Scholarship is presented by Dr. George Elias to Douglas Klier, a Junior from Plaistow, New Hampshire.

The Rosalie S. Wolf Gerontology Consortium Award is presented by Dr. Susan Melia to two students: Audrey Anton, a Senior from Palmer, Massachusetts; and Kathryn Urban, a Senior from Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
