College Names Tom Ryan
as Vice President
for Institutional Advancement
Thomas E. Ryan has been named vice president for Institutional
Advance-ment. As chief development officer, he supervises the
directors of major gifts and planned giving, the annual fund,
alumni relations, research, and foundations.
Tom comes to Assumption from the College of the Holy Cross, where
he served in various development positions for the past 21 years,
including director of Development and most recently, director
of Principal Gifts. As campaign director at Holy Cross, he managed
all aspects of a $60 million campaign, which concluded successfully
at $76
million in 1994.
A 1976 graduate of Holy Cross, Tom served with the Jesuit Volunteer
Corps for two years before joining the Holy Cross staff. He is
on the Executive Board for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Worcester.
On a recent summer morning, Tom reflected on how he came to Assumption.
He said the more he had learned about the College, the more intrigued
and excited he became about the opportunity to be part of the
Assumption community. Once he arrived on campus, he found the
College to be an incredibly welcoming place with extraordinary
people.
"During the interview process, I learned that Dr. Plough
has a clear understanding of where Assumption College is now and
a powerful vision of where it can be in the next five to ten years.
I decided I wanted to work with him to help him realize that vision,"
Tom said.
When he met with the religious of Assumption, the fathers, brothers,
and sisters, Tom saw their strong commitment to the College and
to it being a Catholic institution. He found the trustees to be
highly engaged and thoroughly committed to the institution. "The
chairman of the Board, Fr. John Franck, A.A. is so energized ,
and he has a real devotion to the College," Tom said.
The students Tom met were enthusiastic about their experiences
at Assumption, and he was very impressed with the academic credentials
of the faculty, 94% of whom have terminal degrees from excellent
institutions. "The College and the community can take great
pride in the academic excellence at Assumption," he said.
As Assumption faces the new millennium, Tom is looking forward
to celebrating the College's first century in 2004, and sees the
milestone as an opportunity to promote the College and take it
to the next level in terms of stature, recognition, admissions,
and institutional support. "I see great opportunities for
developing collaborations with faculty, students, alumni, parents,
corporations, and foundations to reach a common goal," he
said. u
