Students Go the Extra Mile-
It Makes Them Even More Productive

Jaclyn Scott '02

Jaclyn Scott truly embodies the spirit of Assumption's slogan "Learn. Achieve. Contribute." She is an outstanding student, who has maintained greater than a 3.7 G.P.A. during her two years here at the College and is also a writing tutor at the Academic Support Center. She has made Dean's List each semester and is involved in the Spanish Club and French Club.
Jaclyn is very involved in Latin America. While attending the Nicaragua Mission last summer with other Assumption students, Jaclyn helped the people of Nicaragua rebuild their community. That trip had a strong impact on her formation, both personally and academically.
In her upper-level history class last semester [HIS 250-Colonial Latin American History], Jaclyn produced a very interesting and academically advanced final paper entitled "The Sexual Exploitation of Women in Pre-Columbian and Colonial Latin America: Concubinage and Prostitution in Cross Cultural Perspective," which has the chance of becoming an original piece of research on her topic and a contribution to the field of Latin-American women's history. According to John F. Chuchiak IV, assistant professor of Latin-American History, "it was an excellent examination into the concepts of sexuality and gender bias in the pre-Columbian and colonial Latin-American world. She argued that the masculine oriented societies of pre-Columbian America and colonial Latin America relegated women to a position of inferiority and it consequently led to widespread physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Jaclyn concluded that morality and cultural concepts of the supposed inferiority of women were remarkably similar in the two different cultures."
Although she is an excellent student, Jaclyn says she feels compelled to also give to the local community. "Assumption has opened up so many opportunities for me. I did well in high school but I never pursued any aspects other than sports. Now, every night I'm doing something but I feel I do better academically because I'm so busy." She
is a volunteer at the College's Reach Out Center, and at Y.O.U. Inc. in Worcester, and also coaches youth basketball at St. Peter's Church in Worcester.

Tommy Olson '02

Tommy Olson is not your average Dean's List student. Most students have not sung before the President of the United States, corresponded with Barry Manilow, or sung the National Anthem at Fenway Park. And that is only a sampling of his singing experience. Tom writes, composes, and makes recordings of his songs on CD's. His goal is to be the next mainstream superstar-a career goal he has had since he was six years old.
Tommy performs as a soloist for the Assumption College Chorale and St. George Church where he is also a cantor. He has been a guest on radio shows, been a featured performer for several First Nights in the New England area, and sung for several benefit performances.
Although Tommy is an extraordinary musician, he separates his education
and his music experiences. "I chose Assumption because I am so grounded in the Worcester area, but the well-rounded learning opportunities here have definitely broadened my experience to help me become a better musician," said Tommy.
Although all of his accomplishments as a singer are far too long to list, as a student Tommy doesn't feel he's any different from other students. "I don't feel that I'm an overachiever. I just keep on producing, writing, and recording my work in addition to my studies. I love it." n
