Duquesne University Philosophy Professor James Swindal will be the guest speaker at the October 12 Installation Ceremony
James Swindal is associate professor and chair of the philosophy department at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh (PA). He specializes in critical theory, with an emphasis on the work of German philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas. Professor Swindal also specializes in Catholic philosophy, having written numerous articles on the topic and co-edited an anthology of Catholic philosophy. His first book, Reflection Revisited, was published in 1999 by Fordham University Press. Currently, he is writing a book, entitled Action and Existence, which examines recent action theory in light of an existential analysis.
Professor Swindal taught philosophy at John Carroll University from 1993-2005. He joined the Duquesne University faculty in 2005. A past president (2003-04) of Philosophers in Jesuit Education, he holds a B.A. (Political Science) from Seattle University, an M.A. in Philosophy from Gonzaga University, an S.T.B. (Theology) from Gregorian University, an S.T.M. (Theology) from the Jesuit School of Theology (Berkeley) and a Ph.D. (Philosophy) from Boston College.
President Cesareo and Professor Swindal have been close friends and colleagues, both at John Carroll University and Duquesne University. They worked together on several initiatives aimed at enhancing the Catholic mission and identity of Catholic colleges and universities.
