M.A. in School Counseling
Admission Requirements
Enrollment in the School Counseling program is open to any qualified individual who meets the admissions standards. All candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Possess a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree (any undergraduate major)
- Have a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0
NOTE: The MTEL exam is not required for admission in to the School Counseling program. Matriculated students must pass the MTEL Communication and Literacy Skills exam prior to enrollment in the practicum.
Candidates for the Massachusetts Initial License for School Guidance Counselor (PreK-8; 5-12) must meet the following standards:
- Prior to enrollment in the practicum, submit evidence of passing scores on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) Communication and Literacy Skills.
NOTE: The School Counseling program is state-approved for the Massachusetts Initial License for School Guidance Counselor (PreK-8 or 5-12). Candidates who complete the state-approved program and thereby earn a first Initial License, are eligible for licensure reciprocity with the approximately 45 other states that are parties to the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDETC) Interstate Contract. -

Candidates Who Do Not Seek Massachusetts Educator Licensure
Candidates are not required to possess a Massachusetts support personnel license to enter the master’s program nor are they required to pass the Massachusetts Communication and Literacy Skills test while they are in the program. They may not enroll in the practicum that leads to eligibility for the Massachusetts Initial License for School Guidance Counselor (PreK-8; 5-12).
