Day 3: Taormina - Cooking Lesson
This morning’s guided walking tour or Taormina features
the Greek Amphitheater with its spectacular view of the Mediterranean
Sea. We walk down to the exotic villa and

Day 4: Siracusa
Driving along the coast this morning, past Catania, we see
thousands of orange and tangerine trees that line both sides
of the road. Our full-day guided tour of Syracuse leads through
the archaeological park. We are reminded that this was once
the capital of Magna Grecia--the Great Greece--the land where
the Greek’s chose to rebuild their country. Syracuse
became the center of the ancient world’s art and sciences,
and was at one time more important and powerful than Athens
itself. A local guide enlightens us and we enjoy a pizza lunch
here today. We return to Taormina for overnight. Dinner is
self-arranged this evening.

Day 5: Mt. Etna – Zafferana Etnea
Today we drive to Mt. Etna, climbing winding roads, above
the tree line to the base of the volcano for a panoramic view
of the surrounding areas. Later we visit the fascinating town
of Zafferana Etnea, which sits at the confluence of three
volcanic valleys. At 600 meters above sea level the view of
the Ionian Sea from the public gardens is fantastic. Off the
square is the Church of Madonna della Providenza, a classic
example of Sicilian baroque architecture with its white stone
facade and twin bell towers. We have the opportunity to sample
one of the town’s foremost agricultural products here–all
natural honey. We return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Viagrande – Lecture & Cooking Lesson
Our excursion today takes us to Viagrande, a town on the southeast
slopes of Mt. Etna, whose year-round mild climate creates
a gardener’s paradise. We enjoy a special lecture and
Cooking Lesson on Mediterranean Cuisine by Mrs. Consoli, a
famous Italian gastronomy journalist, followed by lunch at
her home.

Day 7: Messina – Furnari/Vineyard Visit
After breakfast today we enjoy a full-day excursion to the
towns of Messina and Furnari. Our tour includes a vineyard
visit and ceramic pottery factory. We return to
the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Catania - Acitrezza
Today we have a half-day excursion to two varied cities: the
provincial capital of Catania, and fascinating Acitrezza,
a typical Sicilian fishing village, where, only
minutes from the fashionable high-class resorts, we are immersed
in the traditional local life. We enjoy our Farewell Dinner
together this evening.
