Strathnaver
Settlement Project
Archaeological Field School
IN NORTHERN SCOTLAND
June 10 - July 1, 2006 |
|
The Strathnaver Settlement Project is a five-year collaborative
archaeological field research project in northern Scotland
, involving staff and students from Assumption College and
Glasgow University . The goals of the project are to understand
medieval settlement in Strathnaver, in the far north-west
of Scotland. During the 2006 season, students will survey
and conduct preliminary excavations of a multiperiod site
in the Naver valley, near the villages of Tongue and Bettyhill.
Through hands-on experience, lectures, and readings, students
will learn the fundamentals of field excavation and recording,
field survey, and identification of artifacts and other archaeological
materials. Students will also take field trips to other archaeological
sites in northern Scotland , and have informal lectures on
the local history and environment and on archaeological methods.
Students are required to enroll in one course: ANT 332E, Archaeological
Field Methods (3 credits) through the Assumption College Center
for Continuing & Career Education. Download
a CE registration form.
