President’s Lecture Series: Religious Liberty and the Culture of Life

4 March 2014 - 12:00am
7:00 PM
Type of Event:

Dr. Janet E. Smith, Ph.D, will discuss how attacks on the culture of life go hand-in-hand with attacks on religious liberty, and why many in the United States seem to think that the right to life and (religious) liberty must be sacrificed to the pursuit of happiness.

In her lecture, Dr. Smith argues that only a commitment to the New Evangelization can show us the way to address the present and coming oppression of religious practice.

Janet E. Smith, Ph.D. holds the Father Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit.  Dr. Smith is currently serving a third term as a consulter to the Pontifical Council on the Family and serves the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian unity as a member of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission, III.

Dr. Smith is the author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and of the Right to Privacy and the editor of Why Humanae Vitae Was Right: A Reader. She and Chris Kaczor are co-authors of Life Issues, Medical Choices, Questions and Answers for Catholics.  Dr. Smith has also been published in several academic journals, is a regular columnist for the National Catholic Register and blogs on CatholicVote.com.
