During all March 2015, the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library will be hosting the Mural Exhibit “Art in Motion – Guayasamín’s Ecuador Unframed,” which bridges cultural theory, mathematical analysis, media visualization, pedagogy, and computer programming in an innovative installation of the mural Ecuador (1952), a piece by Oswaldo Guayasamín, one of the most prominent Latin American artists of the Twentieth-Century.

Intended to represent the inherent antagonisms and racial multiplicity of the Ecuadorian nation, the mural of five interchangeable panels that can be arranged in any order and invite constant rearrangement.  As identity is always in motion, such is the feeling behind Guayasamín’s mural.  Unfortunately, the mural -currently exhibited in La Capilla del Hombre in Quito, Ecuador- was framed by many years and thus immobilized… until now.

The only archival quality reproduction of the mural will be exhibited unframed alongside a digital interface with an iPad application created for this project that will allow spectators to view in motion its 30,720 potential configurations, and even to create their own mural.
