Welcome to the Emmanuel d'Alzon Library.  Please take a look at this information about our library services.  Some of it will be "old news," but we hope you will find it helpful:

  • Faculty borrowing privileges: Faculty may borrow library materials from the circulating collection for the current semester.  Some materials, such as videos, may have different loan periods.  Should you need more time, call the Circulation desk (x7135) for information and assistance.

  • Consortium borrowing: Faculty are encouraged to visit other libraries in the Academic and Research Collabortive (ARC) consortium.  Faculty cross-borrowing cards will be sent to you in mid-September.  If you do not receive one, or need one sooner, please call Janice Wilbur at the above extension.

  • Interlibrary Loan: If you or your students need materials that are not available at Assumption, we will be happy to order them through Interlibrary Loan.  Items that are available locally will often arrive in just a few days, but it is best to plan to wait ten days to receive requested items.  For most requests there is no charge.  Interlibrary loan forms are available on our web page. If you have questions about ILL, contact the Reference Staff at x7273.

  • Reserve & e-Reserve circulation: Because many students in your classes may all require access to the same books, videos or articles, we ask that you take advantage of our Reserve service.  Just bring your photocopies (we do not provide photocopying services) and/or submit a list of the library materials you require to Janice at the Circulation Desk, and we will take care of the rest. For more information about our e-reserve service, please go to our FAQs.

  • Online resources: The d'Alzon library is proud to offer many online resources.  Our catalog is available online.  We offer interdisciplinary indexing and full-text services such as FirstSearch, EbscoHost, and LexisNexis as well as subject-specific databases like PsycLIT and the MLA Bibliography.  You will find many of them linked to our web page: http://www.assumption.edu/dept/Library/libraryindex.html

  • Reference assistance: Should you or any of your students require assistance with locating information or with a particular research project, reference staff are available to help you during most of the hours that the library is open.  For in-depth research assistance please call Carole Myles at x7020 to make an appointment.  An Email Reference Request Form is also available for your use at any time.  We will do our best to respond within 24 hours.

  • Research instruction:  Our Reference Department provides instruction any way you want it!  We will work with you or your students one-on-one in reference consultations; we will teach your entire class in a subject-focused session; we will train you or your students in the use of specific databases or resources; we will provide library "tours;" we will come to your classroom, or you can come to us.  Let us know what your needs are, and we will do our best to meet them.  We also appreciate your warning us when you assign a research project or other work requiring use of library materials, so that we may be of greater help to your students.  Please contact Carole Myles (x7020) for more information about instructional or reference services.

  • Collection development: We are proud of our collection. It has been developed over many years with the help of faculty like you.  Please feel free to search our catalog and tell us what is missing.  You can request resources and work with us to fill in the gaps by using the library recommendation acquisition form. This form will be sent to your library liaison who will work within the ordering procedures of your department.  For a list of books that have been recently added to the collection, go to our New Book List.

  • Turnitin Plagiarism Software: A plagiarism prevention system that allows you to "quickly and effectively check all of your students’ work in a fraction of the time necessary to scan a few suspect papers using a search engine." For information on how to get started, go to our Quick Start guide OR call Carole Myles (x7020).

  • Etc.: If you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment for a personal library tour, please give Dawn Thistle a call at x7272 or email her.  We will look forward to being of service to you.
