Texas Mission
June 2-9, 2007

Each June since 1998 a group of Assumption students have traveled to the Southeast Texas border region for a mission service week. Our missionaries connect with local volunteers who are organized by the ARISE community service program which is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. The weeklong program is centered around facilitating summer camp-style activities with neighborhood children. Evening prayer and reflection times help to deepen the experience. The program also includes two visits across the border into Mexico. |

A student's perspective - Felisha Marques
The Texas mission is designed for students to work with underprivileged children. This mission is an opportunity to deepen your faith and understanding of life. It takes place each June in the Texas border region near McAllen, Texas. While working with the ARISE program, students develop strong friendships and bonds with the local volunteers and children. There usually are approximately 8-10 students depending upon the number of applications that come in. These students work together to create a fun-filled week for children ages 6-14. Students plan art and crafts, sports games, and even simple dancing games. The mission really helps students learn about themselves and appreciating what one has. The community building strengthens one’s friendships and can strength one’s faith. After attending the Texas Mission two years in a row, I had two different, but amazing experiences. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in working with children who are underprivileged. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, Felisha Marques. I hope that you consider the Texas mission. Applications are available in the Hagan Center Campus Ministry office. |
