Mexico Mission
¡
AMIGOS!

Since 1986, hundreds of students, staff, and graduates of Assumption College have spent two weeks during May and June working and living in Mexico. There, whether in the country north of Mexico City or in a neighborhood in the southern portion of the city itself, missionaries have been finding new insight into the gifts of community, work, and faith.

COMMUNITY

The experience of a new kind of community begins with formation meetings and fundraising efforts at Assumption throughout the school year. It continues as the Mission group travels together to Mexico in May. Our first community activity is a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadelupe in Mexico City where we pray for Our Lady's inspiration and protection. The experience of community expands as we encounter the warm hospitality of the Religious of the Assumption and the Assumptionists of Mexico. For the first time, many understand that Assumption is a worldwide community without borders that makes the Mexico Mission possible.

WORK

Work is another essential component of the Mexico Mission. Whether doing manual labor for a village , painting a chapel in the country, or playing with neighborhood children, we discover that working together can create a powerful spirit of community and solidarity. The small tasks completed during our short stay do not permanently change the places we visit, but they do change us and connect us with our host communities in Mexico in powerful and unpredictable ways.

FAITH

The gift of faith is what transforms the Mission from a great vacation into a life-changing Mission. Each evening the group gathers to celebrate Mass and share reflections on what they have encountered during the day's work and play. They are inevitably inspired by their new "amigos", and they are moved to see themselves in a new light: the light of faith. For many, this is their first explicit experience of life in the Spirit inspired by Jesus Christ. Throughout their pilgrimage of discovery and beyond, the motto of the Assumption College Mexico Mission endures:

OUR MISSION IS PEOPLE!

Won't you consider becoming an Amigo? The Mexico Mission process begins each fall with applications and interviews due before Thanksgiving break. We meet twice before the Christmas Holiday and several times throughout the spring to form a community, develop our sense of mission, and raise funds together. We travel to Mexico immediately following Assumption's graduation during the last week of May.
