Why Pray the Rosary?
How to Pray the Rosary?

Why Pray the Rosary?

The rosary is more than simply the repetition of prayers. The repetition itself provides an atmosphere that is meditative, but also reaffirms Catholic beliefs. Here are some ways praying the rosary can help you in your life:

1. Take a Break: AC is a fun, exciting, and busy place. It’s often helpful to take a step back from the work and stress of college life. Praying the rosary offers that step back, enabling you to reflect on your purpose, goals, and struggles.

2. The Power of Prayer: Praying the rosary enables you to offer petitions and ask for help, either for yourself or for others. You may not always see the direct results of prayer, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t being answered. Be persistent. God will help you.

3. Learn More about your Faith: Each decade of the rosary focuses on one of the Mysteries of the rosary—Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious. These mysteries concentrate on the lives of Mary and Jesus, and encourage us to connect our lives to them. Mary and Jesus can serve as role models, especially during our times of struggle and hopelessness.

4. Build Community: Praying alone is very different from having a group to pray with. Offering petitions as a group and simply praying together create a supportive community that is established through a common faith.

5. Try Something New: If you have never prayed the rosary before, now is your chance to open yourself up to something new. You may have preconceived notions about praying the rosary—put them aside, take a risk, and try it out. Maybe it’s not for you, but use the opportunity to find out. That’s what college is about.

How to Pray the Rosary?

1. While holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and say, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

2. Recite the Apostles’ Creed:
"I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen."

3. On the first large bead, recite the Our Father:
"Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen."

4. On each of the three small beads, recite a Hail Mary for an increase in faith, hope, and charity:
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

5. Recite a Glory Be after the third Hail Mary:
"Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen."

6. Read the first Mystery and start each decade (one decade equals one Mystery) with an Our Father (on larger bead), ten Hail Marys (for the ten beads), a Glory Be, and the Fatima Prayer:
"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of your mercy."

Optional prayer after Fatima Prayer:
"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we love you; save souls."

The idea is to meditate on each mystery and contemplate what each means to the individual while reciting the prayers out loud. All of the five decades are prayed in the same manner (Reading the Mystery, an Our Father, ten Hail Marys, a Glory Be, the Fatima Prayer, and the Optional Prayer, if desired).

7. At the end of the fifth mystery, recite a Hail, Holy Queen:
"Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Leader:" Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God."

Response: "That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ."

8. Leader: "Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen."

9. After the Hail, Holy Queen, ask the different saints to pray for the individuals:

Example:
( One person): St. Joseph. Response: Pray for us.
(Another person): St. Francis. Response: Pray for us.

9. Finally, conclude by three repetitions of the following:

Leader: "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus"
Response: "Have Mercy on us.
"

End by making the sign of the Cross.
