About the Artist...
Reds by Kristina N. OcchinoKristina N. Occhino holds a BS in Studio Art from

Skidmore College  and a Masters degree in Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design. She is a former Director of the Attleboro Museum, Center for the Arts.  She taught visual arts in the Attleboro Public Schools for ten years.  Besides teaching in her studio, Kris is on the faculty of the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA.

Kris has studied watercolor with such nationally recognized painters as Judi Wagner and Carlton Plummer, AWS.  She has also studied and offered workshops in Sumi-e painting and faux finish painting techniques.

About the Artist’s Work…
Kris paints en plein air, from life and from photographs she has taken of people and places in New England and flowers often found in her husband’s gardens. The work she has exhibited up to now has been rendered in a traditional style, however, she has also created abstract works in mixed watermedia, some of which you will see in this exhibit.  “I enjoy the intellectual challenge found in designing abstracts.   The strategic planning involved in the layering of colors and the process of creating patterns and textures in watercolor, colored inks and acrylics is something I really love.”  Kris claims that the knowledge she has gained in creating her experimental works has helped her improve her traditional painting style. “My “vocabulary” has been expanded through experimentation.”

About the Treetop Studio…
In the fall of 2000, Kris opened the studio in her Attleboro home to the public for the purpose of teaching drawing and painting to adults.  She also accepts commissions for paintings, such as portrait paintings of people, pets or homes.  She can also create one-of-a-kind, hand-painted furnishings and accessories using faux finish painting techniques.

The Emmanuel d'Alzon Library Special Collections Department is home to many works of art, including the Student Collection of Art (mostly prints) and a fine collection of Russian lithographs.

The Student Collection was begun by the Committee for the Arts of the Student Government Association in 1966, and the art works were first exhibited in February 1967.  In the introduction to the exhibition catalog, William J. Des Rochers, '68, explained, "This collection represents the students' effort to realize the role which the visual arts can play in the life of both the College and the community. To this end, the Committee for the Arts undertook this project solely as a student collection of art."   Over the next few years additional works were purchased, and on several occasions art works were loaned to the collection for display. The Student Collection includes works by Peter Gee, Joan Miro, Arnold Singer, Paul Cezanne,  Marie Laurencin, and others.

We will also feature many hand-tinted Russian lithographs and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries collected by primarily by  Fr. Louis Dion, A.A.

Perceptions of Christ /
Images of Faith

Group Exhibition

October 18 -November 26, 2004

Opening reception: Wednesday, October 20, 4:00 p.m.

When different artists meet in a show under one theme, there exists an opportunity to extend aesthetics across an abyss of separate identities. The intent of this exhibition entitled “Perceptions of Christ/ Images of Faith” is to bring artists from various parts of the US and recognize their different perceptions about who Christ is and what he stands for to them. The job of the viewer is not to judge but to observe that different people all have different feelings, experiences and perceptions when asked about their faith and spirituality. This exhibition is unique in that it unites artists from several different regions and several different cultures around the topic of their perceptions of Christ. Most of the artist displayed are professional artists from the US. There are other artists from the regions of Massachusetts, New York City, Colorado, New Mexico and Vermont. There are Native American artists, Latino artists, a Chinese artist, and many other women and men artists from all walks of life. All come together with separate visions of what Christ is to them. Some of them paint landscapes, some self-protraits, and some traditional religious iconography. The mediums in which the artists produce their work include painting, photography, drawing and computer art.  The mix of the show is sure to impress, astound, and inspire. It is our hope that it uplifts and makes you think in new and interesting ways about spirituality and Christ. Through the art shown in this exhibition, perhaps a better understanding of the way different people see spirituality will result. The global community is getting smaller by the day. The utilization of the aesthetic imagination of the artists helps link the individual isolation we can sometimes feel as humans. As you will see in this exhibition, artists are amazingly uncanny at pulling inner thoughts and feelings to the surface and making them visual.
