Opening Reception and Lecture,
Wednesday, March 12, 4:00 p.m.

Fr. Lamothe, Professor of Music, is well known on campus for his involvement in the musical activities offered or sponsored by the Department of Art and Music.  If you have ever worshipped in the Chapel, you have been blessed by the beauty of its stained glass window—which Fr. Lamothe designed.   A number of his sketches for the Chapel windows are included in this exhibition.

He has also gained renown as an iconographer, a painter of religious images intended to lead people to prayer and a “greater relationship with God.”  Several of Fr. Lamothe’s icons are featured in this exhibition, but his artistic expression does not stop there.  Photographs and watercolors prove his eye for color and detail, not to mention artistic skill.  In all his works one can see humility and the love of God’s creation.Icon

In addition to his own work, Fr. Lamothe has chosen many items from his art collection to share with the Assumption community.  These paintings are grouped according to theme: The Forest and the Trees, Souvenirs de Voyage, Portraits, and works by Cordelia Hinds Wheeler that Fr. Lamothe has restored.

Artist's Statement :
My first experience with a camera came in 1953 when I was stationed in Korea with the United States Air Force.  I purchased a 35 mm Zeiss Contessa at the PX and began taking color slides.  It was my way of brining home experiences from another culture.  For the past twenty years, I have used a Canon AE-1 and, most recently, a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 to document travels and capture scenes in Great Britain, Ireland, France, Italy and New England.

Something catches my eye – my first lens.  I “take” the picture as I see it, want to remember it, and share it.  Although, I often try to set up an unusual view of a subject to “make” it more interesting.

Doors, windows, alleys, arches, and passageways fascinate me.  I notice contrasting shapes, angles, colors and textures.  Even in my representational work, there is sometimes an aspect of abstraction.

I prefer to shoot in color because I feel it captures the special reality of the subject.
