Artist's Statement
:
My first experience with a camera came in 1953 when I was stationed
in Korea with the United States Air Force. I purchased a 35 mm Zeiss
Contessa at the PX and began taking color slides. It was my way of
brining home experiences from another culture. For the past twenty
years, I have used a Canon AE-1 and, most recently, a Canon EOS Rebel 2000
to document travels and capture scenes in Great Britain, Ireland, France,
Italy and New England.
Something catches my eye – my first lens. I “take” the picture as I see it, want to remember it, and share it. Although, I often try to set up an unusual view of a subject to “make” it more interesting.
Doors, windows, alleys, arches, and passageways fascinate me. I notice contrasting shapes, angles, colors and textures. Even in my representational work, there is sometimes an aspect of abstraction.
I prefer to shoot in color because I feel it captures the special
reality of the subject.
