CORY BAILEY

Head Football Coach

Cory Bailey, defensive coordinator for the Greyhounds in 2002, was named the head football coach January 23.

The announcement of Bailey was made by Ted Paulauskas, Director of Athletics.

"A great testament to the process has been the incredible number of outstanding individuals who have aspired to lead and direct our program," said Paulauskas. "We feel that Cory has an outstanding future ahead of him and combined with his tireless work-ethic will be the man to lead our football program into yearly contention in the Northeast-10 Conference."

"His resume, which includes college and high school responsibilities as well as experience as both a player and coach at the professional level, is a fine balance that has been difficult to replicate. His knowledge of the game, discipline, organizational skills and his sheer excitement about coaching make him an ideal person for our program---even in his first year as a head coach."

Bailey, who has been on the job heading the recruiting process since the season ended is excited about the program and its future.

"This is a super opportunity for me both personally and professionally. Assumption College is really an easy sell to student-athletes---especially in view of the College's Catholic liberal arts mission and the outstanding reputation it enjoys in the academic sphere. With the anticipated full support of the administration and the expected facility improvements, we feel that our team will be a annual contender in the Northeast-10 Conference."

The 28-year-old Bailey was a standout performer for Coach Nick Quataro (now offensive coordinator at the University of Kansas) at Fordham University from 1994-97. He earned first team all-Patriot League honors at center in both 1996 and 1997 and was a pre-season all America selection in several publications prior to the 1997 season. He captained the team in 1997 and was named its Most Valuable Player.

He was also a all-scholastic performer at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA.

He was graduated from Fordham with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a minor in Communications in May 1998.

After graduation he signed as a free agent with the National Football League's New York Giants and survived through official mini-camp and summer camp. He also was a clinician at the New Jersey High School Coaches' Clinic.

In June 1999 he was named an assistant coach at Dean College (Franklin, MA)---coaching both the defensive line and the special teams --- and also coordinated the strength and conditioning programs. The defense was ranked second in the nation among junior college programs. He recently (February) became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.

In January 2000 he was named assistant coach at Iona College (New Rochelle, NY)-- coaching tight ends, offensive tackles and long snappers. He left Iona to play professionally with the Rhein Fire (Dusseldorf, Germany) in NFL-Europe . . . after being a seventh-round draft selection. He started at offensive guard and did all the long snapping while also participating in film breakdown and scouting of opponents.

He came back to coach at his hometown high school---King Philip Regional (Wrentham, MA)--- as both the head freshman coach and varsity defensive coordinator and offensive line coach. After an internship with the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (summer 2003), he assumed duties at Assumption College.

He and his wife Lisa reside in Wrentham, MA.
