EASTON, Mass.-- Freshman Jennifer Lechner (Rochester, N.Y.) scored
a pair of second half goals, including the game-winner with under
10 minutes remaining, to lift second-seeded and ninth-ranked Mansfield
to a 2-1 victory over fourth seeded Assumption in the 2001 ECAC
Division II Field Hockey Championship Sunday at Gorman Field.
Senior Stephanie Fleming's (Feeding Hills, Mass.) goal just 4:35 into the match on an assist from junior Kristin Garrity (Holliston, Mass.) lifted Assumption to a 1-0 lead at the break, but Lechner tied things for Mansfield in the 54th minute when she converted a feed from fellow freshman Ashley Celaschi (Myerstown, Pa.). Lechner provided the heroics once again with 9:46 to play in the match by netting the go-ahead marker on an assist from senior Christine Nugent (Vestal, N.Y.), and sophomore Heather Long (Pottstown, Pa.) made that stand up in goal for the Mountaineers with a nine-save effort, including four stops in the final five minutes.
Junior Kristyn Bonnyman (Mansfield, Mass.) made three saves in goal for the Greyhounds in the setback, as Assumption outshot Mansfield by a 12-7 margin for the match. The win was the second for the Mountaineers over the Greyhounds on the season, as Mansfield had posted a 3-2 triumph on October 14th as well.
Mansfield closes out the season with a 13-7 mark in claiming its first ECAC title, while Assumption ends the year at 10-10 overall.
