ASSUMPTION COLLEGE ANNOUNCES
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RECRUITS
WORCESTER, Mass. --- Maine RoundBALL Magazine Player-of-the-Year MEGAN URBAN (Portland, ME), three-time New England Prep all-star forward CHARDE FLOYD (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy), two-time all-Providence Journal standout forward SARA CZARNECKI (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) and three-time Dual Valley Conference all-star forward BRITTNEY BISHOP (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc) head the final recruiting list for Assumption College's women's basketball program.
The Greyhounds, who won a team-record 21 games in 2003-04 (21-9), need to replace graduated seniors KATELYN DWYER (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield), MICHELLE TOWNE (East Taunton, MA/Taunton) and MARGARET LILJEDAHL (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester).
Dwyer averaged 18.3 points and shot .626 from the floor (leading the Northeast-10 Conference in both categories) and was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player-of-the-Year as well as earning all-conference and all-E.C.A.C. honors and all-America status from both Daktronics and Division II Basketball Bulletin. Towne led the conference in rebounding and earned all-conference and all-E.C.A.C. honors. Liljedahl, the team's point guard, was recognized as its top defensive performer.
The 6-foot-3 Urban averaged 20.5 points, 10.4 rebounds leading her team to the state Division A title. She scored 1,068 career points. Floyd, whose father Ernie was a standout at crosstown Holy Cross, scored 1,141 points as a three-time all-star as Worcester Academy.
Czarnecki averaged 14.8 points, 9.4 rebounds at Cumberland High, while Bishop averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds at Nipmuc.
"Our recruiting needs were pretty obvious," said Coach KERRY PHAYRE. "We lost two outstanding forwards and needed to take steps to replenish their scoring and rebounding numbers. We think that this group can help fill that void. All will get an early opportunity to earn significant playing time."
The Greyhounds open their season Monday, November 15 at New Jersey Institute of Technology before playing in the Stonehill College Mixer, Nov. 19-20.
