I.T.A. RECOGNIZES SIX GREYHOUNDS
ON ITS ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Six-time Northeast-10 Conference regular-season and post-season tournament champion Assumption College is one of 16 teams recognized nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on its all academic list.

The Greyhounds, coached by JOHN IPPOLITO (Leominster, MA), also had six players recognized as individual Scholar-Athletes.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a GPA of at least 3.2. All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the N.C.A.A. eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2003 and spring 2004).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

The tennis team earned an amazing 3.51 GPA to also win the athletics department's Team Academic Award. The Greyhounds, who have won 76 consecutive matches in Northeast-10 Conference action, were the only conference team AND the only New England Division II team recognized.

Recognized individually were:
DAN DOENGES (Fr., Rutland, VT/Rutland)
MICHAEL GOLDMAN (So., Worcester, MA/Doherty)
ALEX MADRIGAL (Sr., San Jose, COSTA RICA/American)
JAMES NEWMAN (Jr., Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA/Damelin)
SEBASTIAN PAQUETTE (Fr., Worcester, MA/St. John's)
MATT STOPP (Fr., Altoona, PA/Altoona)

Five of the six players---Doenges, Goldman, Madrigal, Newman and Stopp--- earned Northeast-10 Conference All-Star status, while Newman was recently named the E.C.A.C. Robbins Award winner as the organization's outstanding Division II scholar-athlete. He was also named a third-team academic all-America as selected by CoSIDA.

The Greyhounds open their fall season at the Boston College Invitational, September 10-11.
