THE ASSUMPTION COLLEGE CHAPEL CHOIR

The Assumption College Chapel Choir is primarily a liturgical choir comprised of approximately 65-75 singers drawn from all areas of the undergraduate and graduate student body who possess many levels of musical talent. The Choir regularly ministers at the 7PM student mass in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, a modern structure built in 1968 and designed by architect and college Alumni Norman Nault. In addition, the Choir provides music for all other liturgical celebrations at the college, such as the Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, Masses during Family Weekend and Open House Weekend, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, and the Baccalaureate Mass. It recently sang for the Founder’s Day celebration Mass as a part of the college’s centenary celebration, performed at the President’s Council dinner at Worcester's historic Mechanics Hall, and was invited for a second time to provide backup vocals for country music legend Kenny Rogers at two concerts on his ChristMas tour: Kenny Rogers and Friends Celebrate the Season.

In harmony with the three-year ABC cycle of readings for the liturgical year, the Chapel Choir recently adopted a three-year program cycle for the Spring semester during which it 1) produces a fully staged production of Stephen Schwartz’s sMash-hit Broadway musical GODSPELL (Spring ’04), undertakes a Choir Mission Tour in order to carry its music and message to others (Spring ’05), and 3) presents a concert for Holy Week featuring selections from all three sections of Handel’s Messiah (Spring ’06) with soloists and chamber orchestra.

The Chapel Choir is under the direction of Ms. Jane Shivick and is accompanied by Dr. Frank Corbin. Accompanying instruments include piano, bass guitar, percussion, and organ. Each week, Choir members are asked to volunteer for solo opportunities at the upcoming weekly liturgy. Members then have the chance to coach their solo both vocally and musically with the Director. Choir members are taught to sing in various languages through the use of contemporary and traditional repertoire.

The Chapel Choir rehearses in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit every Thursday evening at 7PM beginning September 1, 2005. No audition or prior choral experience is necessary. Education in excellent vocal and musical skills are taught and maintained.
