The Junior League of Worcester, Inc.

The Junior League of Worcester is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of training volunteers. It's purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Junior League of Worcester membership prepares you to expect the best and do your best wherever you go, whatever you do. You will develop skills to shape your future and become a force for positive change in the community, in ways that matter most to you. You will make lasting friendships and join an international network of women who understand that change is possible, step by step, person by person.

History

The first Junior League was founded by Mary Harriman, in the city of New York. Since 1901, a total of 296 leagues have been established, with a combined membership of nearly 200,000 women in four countries (United States, Canada, England, and Mexico). The leagues are affiliated through the Association of Junior Leagues International.

The Junior League of Worcester was established in 1924 with ten members. For more than 75 years, it has continued to grow by improving and enriching the quality of life for women and children. Through a shared mission, league members work to make a difference through individual and collaborative effort.

Our Projects.

Project Fresh Start assists families as they leave Friendly House shelter for apartments. Families receive small appliances, cleaning products, bedding, and other household items, both new and gently used. The Day Care Reader Program, established in 1982, brings books and readers to local day care centers. JLW volunteers read to children on a monthly basis and donate all books to establish on-site libraries. This project also supplies gently used, age appropriate books to the centers.

The Adopt-An-Angel project provides holiday gifts to needy children. Through the cooperation of local social services agencies and area banks, members of the general public select a child's name and purchase gifts from his or her wish list.

Scholarships are offered annually to young women who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to volunteerism. Graduating seniors may obtain an application through all area high schools, both public and private.

In addition, the JLW participates regularly in Done-In-A-Day projects that benefit from volunteers and funds including: The Mustard Seed, Kids Cafe', Children's Fund, Y.O.U. Inc, Rainbow Child Development and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC). Beginning in September 2001, we will begin a new collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools' "Coats for Kids" Program .

Our Fund raisers

Funding provides JLW members with valuable hands-on training in small business and event management. More importantly, however, it allows the JLW to carry out its many community projects and activities. Through the combined generosity and support of our members, corporate sponsorship and the general public, we are able to reach more needy families each year.

Other Projects

The JLW maintains a focus area to promote the awareness and prevention of physical and sexual abuse of children. Begun in 1999, "A Voice For Children Community Bike Ride" benefits organizations in the Worcester area that continue the vital work of prevention and advocacy.

The Festival of Trees features beautifully decorated trees, a holiday market place, designer showcase rooms, a cafe' and lively entertainment. Please come and enjoy the splendor of the Festival of Trees with the entire family. Advanced ticket sales begin in early fall.

The JLW Thrift Shop has served the Worcester community since 1931. Currently located at the corner of Chestnut and Pleasant Streets in the downtown area, the Shop offered gently used apparel and gift items for the entire family. Bargain prices are available every day to the general public. Please call 752-2073 for hours of operation.

Now in it's third printing, our cookbook "A Taste of New England" makes a perfect gift for a favorite teacher, young bride, hostess, or even to treat yourself! Available for $16.95, the cookbook contains delicious recipes that reflect traditional and contemporary New England cooking. It may be ordered through the Thrift Shop or ordered by mail.

The JLW has recently approved the establishment of an Endowment Fund that will ensure long-term support for its projects. With an initial goal of $100,000, gift contributions are accepted from individuals, organizations or corporations who wish to advocate our work in the Worcester community.
