J. Richard Nedder HA84

Dick received the College’s Honorary Alumnus Award in 1984. He was former president of Thom McAn, a shoe line which began in 1922 and became the largest American shoe retailer in the 1970s, with 1,400 stores. The popularity of sneakers in the 1980s hurt Thom McAn sales, and by 1996 the remaining stores were either converted into Footaction outlets or closed, which ended the existence of the Worcester-based retailer.

Dick was a tremendous supporter of Assumption College. He and wife Helen had three children, including Joseph Jr. ’76 and Elaine ’77. Dick passed away in 2007.
