Fred Barakat ’61

From the winter 2007 issue of Assumption Magazine:

After 25 years with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Fred Barakat ’61 announced that he would retire as the ACC’s associate commissioner for men’s basketball at the end of the 2006–07 academic year.

According to the ACC, he began his tenure as the coordinator of basketball officials, playing a key role in the development of that area. He also oversaw the league’s scheduling for the men’s basketball television package and has been the manager of the prestigious ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament for the past 16 years.

“Fred has served this league with distinction for 25 years,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “His leadership in the areas of officiating, scheduling, and as the director of the ACC Tournament has been exemplary. He has done an outstanding job for our league in a very challenging capacity.”

Prior to his appointment at the ACC, Fred was the head basketball coach at Fairfield University for 11 years. As an undergraduate at Assumption, he was a two-time college All-American in basketball and baseball. After being drafted by the New York Knicks of the NBA, Fred began his coaching career at Montclair (NJ) State College, earning a Master’s degree in guidance and psychology. A 2004 inductee into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, he is also a member of the Hudson County (NJ), Assumption College, and Fairfield University Athletic Halls of Fame.

Fred and his wife, Florence, reside in Greensboro, NC. They have four children—Nancy, Amy, Christie, and Rich.
