Colleen Ritzer Remembrance Walk

In October 2013, Colleen Ritzer, a 2011 Assumption College alumna and dear friend of many, tragically lost her life at Danvers High School where she served as a math teacher. In just over a year, through her tireless dedication, Colleen Ritzer ’11 made a tremendous impact on her students, their families and the community.

Friends of the 2011 Assumption College graduate invite the community to register for the Colleen Ritzer Remembrance Walk at Assumption on Sunday, April 27, 2014

In addition to the walk, which starts at noon, several events will be held that day to memorialize Ritzer and raise funds to support an endowed scholarship established in her name by Assumption and members of the Class of 2011. The scholarship recognizes two of Ritzer’s passions—teaching and math—and will be annually awarded to an Assumption junior or senior math major planning to teach at the high school level after graduation.

“We think of Colleen often, and she continues to inspire us to live our lives to the fullest,” said Caroline Rufo ‘11, one of Ritzer’s friends and one of the event organizers. “Each day we are reminded of something she said or did that encourages us to live a selfless life. Through this walk, we can raise the necessary resources to provide scholarships to those Assumption students who wish to pursue teaching as a profession.”

Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in the College’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Family, friends, faculty and students will then process to the Kennedy Memorial Hall at 11:30 a.m. for a tree dedication in Ritzer’s memory. As a math major with a concentration in secondary education and a minor in psychology, many of her classes were conducted in that building. Lunch will follow on the Chapel lawn.

Participants may register at www.assumption.edu/ColleenRitzerWalk. Registration for alumni is $20; general public, $25; Assumption students, $5; and those under 18, $10. All proceeds benefit the Colleen Ritzer Memorial Scholarship Fund. Participants will receive a T-shirt and lunch.

"In such a short time Colleen achieved the goals she set for herself, and, along the way, made a tremendous impact,” added Rufo. “We hope the Assumption scholarship will create a lasting legacy to Colleen’s passion and commitment to teaching and inspire other students to purse teaching as a profession.”

You are invited to join us for this special day to remember Colleen. We hope you, your friends and families will help honor this special individual who selflessly gave so much of herself to all she touched.
