PARKS IN THE 1850s

1850's America was witness to the birth of public parks. The land for Elm Park in Worcester, MA was purchased with the intent of being the first public park in the United States. The park was designed for the wealthier of society. Paths were designed for ladies and men to promenade around the park at their leisure. Graceful Victorian bridges spanned the pond at several points, while the paths were lines with trees and other shrubbery. Elm Park was also year round. During the winter, men, women and children were encouraged to ice skate, while the in the summer, resting under a tree was fashionable.
