Outside Scholarships: For scholarships derived from meritorious sources that are in recognition of a particular achievement of the student, unmet need will be filled first. Any remaining scholarship will reduce work-study then loan. If there is additional remaining scholarship, it will reduce Assumption grant dollar for dollar. Private grants/scholarships derived from non-meritorious sources (state or federal grants or tuition subsidies based on parents' employment) will reduce Assumption grant dollar for dollar.
Course Load Requirements: All aid awarded is subject to verification of enrollment status. Changes in registration status may result in an adjustment or cancellation of financial aid awards. All undergraduate students must be enrolled full time in order to receive Assumption scholarships or grants. To qualify for certain federal assistance, students must be registered for six credits or more. Recipients of state scholarships must be full time students, registered for twelve credits or more.
Verification Process: Financial aid applicants can be selected by either the Department of Education or Assumption College to verify the accuracy of the information provided on the FAFSA form. Students will be notified by the Financial Aid Office if you have been selected. If you are a new student, your financial aid offer letter will be tentative until the verification process is complete. If you are a returning student, you will not receive a financial aid award until the verification process is complete.
Those selected for verification may be asked to remit a completed verification worksheet, complete IRS Data Retrieval (or provide copies of IRS tax transcript(s)) and/or additional documentation regarding taxable and untaxed income. Please refer to the Forms and Documents section for more information.
Awarding Policies: After aid eligibility is determined, students will be sent a financial aid award letter detailing aid available for the specified award year. We will assume that you accept the entire award package offered unless you specifically notify us that you wish to decline all or part of your award. If you are declining aid, you must do so in writing via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. Each aid recipient is also responsible for informing the Office of Financial Aid in writing of:
Changes in anticipated credit load
Changes in housing status
Changes in family financial circumstance as reported on the FAFSA
Receipt of outside aid/scholarships
Eligibility Criteria: Assumptions are made that recipients will meet all tests of eligibility established by the federal government and Assumption College. If at any time the student ceases to be eligible, awards will be canceled. Our assumption is that each student meets all of the following criteria: is accepted to and enrolled /will enroll in a program of study at Assumption College, is a citizen or eligible non-citizen, maintains a full time registration status (with the exception of several federal and state programs), is maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by the college, is free from default on any previous student loan or refund obligation, is eligible in terms of computed need, and is in compliance with draft registration requirements.
Study Abroad: Students who are planning to study abroad must be approved through the Dean of Studies. The student is responsible for paying the bill. Generally, the financial aid award does not change with participation in the internship program. Additional costs can include round-trip airfare, student visa fees (if applicable) and weekend travel. In nearly all instances your financial aid status remains the same, just as if you were living on campus. Tre are a few exceptions to the transfer of aid policy and students may contact the Financial Aid Office for complete details.
Withdrawal from the College: If you withdraw from Assumption College, you should schedule an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss the implications of your decision on your financial aid. You will receive an informational loan package including an exit interview form which should be completed and returned to the Office of Financial Aid if you have borrowed any federal loans.
Please keep in mind, if you leave during the middle of an academic period and have to repeat a semester in order to graduate, you may not be making “Satisfactory Academic Progress” and would not be able to receive aid for the period being repeated.
Return of Title IV Funds (Federal and some state financial aid) : Title IV fund rules assume that a student earns his or her aid based on the period of time he or she remained enrolled for the term. Unearned aid, other than work-study, must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education up until the 60% point in the term. At the 60% point in the term, the student is considered to have earned all of his or her aid.
Return of Institutional Financial Aid: Students are allowed to retain institutional (Assumption grants and scholarships, including academic scholarships) financial aid at the same rate that the credit to tuition (refund) policy is calculated. (This policy is subject to change at the discretion of the College).
Renewing Your Financial Aid: It is expected that your financial aid will remain approximately the same as long as: your family’s financial situation does not change, the number of siblings in college does not decrease, and/or the number of family members in your household does not decrease. Financial aid is granted for one academic year only. Aid for subsequent years is offered only if all renewal application materials are filed by respective deadlines.
Students are limited to eight semesters of institutional (Assumption) financial aid, unless otherwise approved by the Director. Appeals should be addressed to the Director of Financial Aid.
For merit scholarship renewals, please contact the Financial Aid Office to obtain the minimum GPA requirements for your scholarship.
Satisfactory Academic Progress: In order to retain financial aid eligibility, all undergraduate students enrolled on either a full-time or part-time basis must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). SAP is defined by the regulations of the U.S. Department of Education as “proceeding in a positive manner toward fulfilling degree requirements.” These standards are differentiated from the academic standing policy as defined in the College Catalog.
Students are evaluated on an annual basis to occur at the end of the spring semester. SAP review includes the following qualitative and quantitative standards of measurement: Cumulative GPA, Credit Hour Completion and Maximum Time Frame Limitation.
All degree-seeking, undergraduate students must meet the following minimum cumulative GPA requirements based on the number of attempted credits:

All degree-seeking, undergraduate students must earn at least 67% of the credits they attempt. A student must earn this minimum percentage of credits each year to ensure they are on pace to complete their educational program within the allotted Maximum Time Frame.
The Maximum Time Frame for completing a program cannot be longer than 150% of the published length of the program or the required number of credits of the student’s degree program. For a full-time student pursuing a 4-year degree, the student is allowed up to 6 years or 180 attempted credits of financial aid eligibility to earn the 120 credits required for degree completion. All semesters the student is enrolled will count towards the maximum time frame, even if the student did not receive aid for each of those semesters. If it becomes apparent that the student will be unable to meet SAP standards within the maximum time frame, the student will become ineligible for financial aid.
When calculating cumulative GPA and attempted and earned credits, the following conditions apply:
Incomplete – will not count until an official grade has been posted, after which SAP will be re-evaluated.
Withdrawals – will be counted as attempted for those classes dropped after the end of the College’s add/drop period.
Repeated Courses – will be counted as attempted and the higher earned grade will be used to calculate the GPA.
Transfer Credits – will be counted as attempted and earned credits, but will not be used towards the cumulative GPA.
Regaining Financial Aid Eligibility
Students not meeting the minimum standards for SAP will be notified in June by the Office of Financial Aid. Ineligible students will have 10 days from the date of the letter to submit a letter of appeal. The basis on which a student may file an appeal includes the following: the death of a relative, an injury or illness of the student, or other special circumstance that prevented the student from making SAP. The appeal needs to address what has changed in the student’s situation that will allow the student to demonstrate SAP at the next evaluation.
Appeals will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. The Appeals Committee will respond in writing to each student regarding the outcome of their appeal. If the appeal is approved by the committee, the student will be eligible to enroll and receive financial assistance either on a Financial Aid Probation Status or an Academic Education Plan for their next semester of enrollment. The committee will not consider subsequent appeals unless there is an extenuating circumstance.
Financial Aid Probation: If a student’s appeal is approved, they may be placed on Financial Aid Probation. The student is allowed to enroll in classes and receive financial aid for one semester. At the end of the semester, the student will be re-evaluated for SAP. If the student has still not met SAP standards, the student will become ineligible for financial aid for all subsequent semesters until they comply with SAP standards.
Academic Education Plan: A student’s appeal may be approved with the condition they follow an Academic Education Plan, standards of which will be set forth by the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. The student is allowed to enroll in classes and receive financial aid for one semester. At the end of the semester, the student will be reviewed to ensure they are meeting the terms of their Plan. Progress of the Plan will continued to be monitored annually after the end of each spring semester.
If the student chooses not to appeal or the appeal is denied, the student may continue to enroll in classes (without the assistance of financial aid) if they are still academically eligible to do so. Payment plans and alternative loans are available to assist the student during the semester(s) in which the student remains ineligible for aid. A student may regain eligibility by meeting SAP standards in future semesters.
