The Financial Aid Process
Applying for and receiving financial aid is a process that takes a few months and involves not only the Assumption College Office of Financial Aid but also third-party federal and financial services agencies. This page outlines the process and helpful hints.

The Process
To apply for financial aid at any college or university, your family must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We strongly encourage everyone to fill out the application — you and your family may be pleasantly surprised by the funding you may receive.

The government uses the information in the FAFSA to calculate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Factors such as total family income and earnings, assets, number of people in the household, and number attending college at once are among the factors taken into consideration to determine your EFC.

We take your EFC and subtract it from the cost of attendance, which includes tuition and estimated costs of room and board, travel, books, fees, and personal expenses. The result represents your need.

The financial aid package you ultimately qualify for is determined by your need and your academic promise. Assumption also provides academic scholarships based on a student’s academic record. You do not need to fill a FAFSA to be considered for academic scholarships.

Timeline

Helpful Tips
  • Missing the on-time priority filing date may limit the amount of aid for which you are considered.
  • You can complete the FAFSA using estimated income and tax figures. If necessary, do this rather than missing our priority filing date. Be prepared to provide completed, signed copies of your federal tax returns, tax schedules, and W-2 forms, but only if requested. Respond quickly to ALL requests for information.
  • Put the student's name and social security number on all documents submitted to our office.
  • Keep a copy of all documents related to your financial aid application and award.
  • Keep a record of all previous loans, including promissory notes and disclosure statements.
  • Notify the financial aid office of any scholarships you expect to receive outside of Assumption College.
  • If you have questions about filling out the FAFSA, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED AID (1-800-433-3243).
