What does it mean to be test optional?

Assumption College is test score optional. Prospective students are no longer required to provide SAT or ACT standardized scores during the application review. Assumption College has carefully evaluated the data regarding our students and reviewed data from other colleges and universities that have become test-score optional and determined that standardized test scores are not the best predictors of success.

If students do not choose to submit test scores, applications will be reviewed on the high school transcript, the strength of the curriculum chosen, letters of recommendation, the nature and quality of the college essay and involvement in extra-curricular activities. The holistic approach to admissions decisions affords Assumption the opportunity to select the best applicants for admission and assemble the best-possible incoming class.

If students feels that their test scores are a true reflection of their ability, then the scores should be sent and they will be considered along with the other application items. If students elect not to send scores, they will not be penalized.
