You and your child are almost there.  The list of potential colleges has been narrowed down and applications submitted.  Now is the time to begin focusing on financial aid opportunities.

Before applying for financial aid, which you can begin on January 1, 2015, your child needs to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Below are a few tips for making this process as easy possible.

There are a few steps you should strongly consider before you begin the FASFA:

  1. Complete the FAFSA4caster. Before you file the FAFSA, you may want to complete the FAFSA4caster. The FAFSA4caster will help you understand your options for paying for college.
  2. Get your Federal PIN – you can apply for one today. To complete the FAFSA online, both the parent and student need to apply for a federal PIN (Personal Identification Number). Your PIN acts as an electronic signature that is used for verification upon completing the form. Beat the online rush that is common in mid-January. Log on to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for your PIN today.
  3. Obtain your Federal School Codes. A Federal School Code number is required for each college to which your child is applying. Obtaining all your needed school codes in advance will save you time. Assumption College's Federal School Code is 002118.

Beginning in mid-February, students and parents who have completed their 2014 IRS tax return may be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval tool through FAFSA on the Web to electronically view their tax information. The tax information can also be securely transferred into the FAFSA.
